Name: Boris Terzos
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 20
Height: 5’11
Hair Color: Bald
Eye Color: Hidden, but are very light blue
Physical description: Boris wears a helmet that covers the upper part of his head and the back of his neck. For him to see there are three slits with pieces of blue glass covering the slits that let him see out, but hides his eyes from everyone else. The two outer slits are the actual eyeholes, while the center is actually a switch that lets him change between normal, night, and thermal visions. Below that is a mask that covers his mouth, nose, and chin, and connects to the helmet at the back of his neck, completely hiding his head. The mask is a sort of gas mask that lets him breathe in any environment. The rest of his body is covered in a black, sort of fire-retardant layer, and over that is his world’s battle armor. The armor consists of a pair of gauntlets, shoulder pads, a chest plate, a pair of boots that go up to his knees, leg guards, and a belt with a knife and sheath for close-quarters combat, all black except for the chest plate. The chest plate is black with the “Triangle of Shame” in the center (explained in History). The triangle is red with a black ‘X’ inside of it.
Personality: Boris, despite being born a third child (which is sort of a taboo on his planet) and having been looked down upon, has better self-esteem than some others that weren’t “Thirds”. He tends to stay quiet unless someone stops him or calls out his name and talks to him, or if he needs to talk to someone. He is also slightly uncomfortable around some of the half-female creatures. He believes the animal parts are actually separate creatures that are trying to eat the female part. Unless someone is talking to him, he will slowly approach the creature from behind, slowly draw his knife with his right hand, and reach for the tail with his left hand. Almost all of the time this just results in Boris getting injured for touching the person without permission. Of course, he restrains himself from doing that to something bigger, say, a Naga, but not from fear of the Naga eating him so much as the creature he thinks is attacking the female letting go of the female part and attacking him.
History: Several years before Boris’ birth, his home world’s government announced that the planet was on the brink of overpopulation. In order to prevent this, they stated that no family shall have more than two children. If a family has a third child, that child will not be treated like the others. Having more than three is outlawed, and anyone expecting any more than three children will be severely punished. Now that that little tidbit of information is known, the history might make more sense…
Boris’ parents had already had two children, a couple of girls, but they didn’t think the family would be perfect until they had a boy. They knew what would happen to him, but no matter what they would always treat him like he was one of the family and not like some animal that deserves nothing. So they decided to try for a little boy.
The day Boris was born, the doctor warned about what will happen to the young boy in the future, but everyone already knew. When the whole family was seen together, they were given odd looks and dirty stares for having a third child. They were never allowed in the fancy restaurants, unless one of the children stayed at home or with a babysitter.
All throughout his school years Boris was picked on and treated unfairly by the other children and the teachers. Until after his school years, Boris only knew one Third, and that was himself.
When Boris turned 18, he decided to join the military. Part of the reason was because he wanted to show everyone that a third can be just as good as everyone else. The other part was because the military would take anyone without a second thought. The only thing was every Third had to wear the “Triangle of Shame” in the center of their armor’s chest plate. The only reason was so the Military could keep tabs on every Third and, in case one died, they could give a “proper” burial. They also let everyone choose what close-quarters combat weapon they would like. As long as it was one-handed and could only be used within arm’s reach of the enemy. Of all of the choices, Boris chose a combat knife. He felt that he, personally, would be better with a knife than anything else.
After two years of training, a war broke out with a nearby planet. Boris’ planet invaded the enemy planet with a rather small first wave of soldiers, Boris being part of the first wave. There was speculation that this was all a trap, but the military assured everyone that their recon group reported very little activity where the wave was going to land, which was supposedly a barren field in the middle of some mountains. When the first wave landed, everyone grabbed a battle rifle and head out to search for any enemy encampments nearby. Boris had to check near some caves for anyone that might be hiding around inside of them. When he peeked in, he heard gunshots coming from behind him. He quickly turned around and readied his weapon when a bullet buzzed past his head. He crouched low and looked in the direction the bullet came from. Another bullet barely missed him. He dropped his weapon and ran into the caves to get out of the fray. While running he raised his hand to his forehead to switch to night vision when something…Odd happened. While running, he somehow ended up in a bright, forested area. He thought he was hallucinating at first, because one second he was in pitch-black cave with the only light coming from behind, and the next he is in a well illuminated forest, with no sign of the forest beforehand. He tried backing up, but after a few steps he did he bumped into a tree. He turned around to see if he could see any part of the cave he was just in, but he saw nothing but trees and vegetation.
‘Did I just escape having to fight in a war?’ Boris thought to himself, raising his hand to his chin. ‘When I find another way back, I’ll have to explain what happened. That is, IF I find another way back.’ Boris starts to pace, thinking of what to do. ‘To be honest, though, I think that was just a suicide mission, and the military knew that. I’ll have to tell everyone if I get back. But what are the chances of anyone listening to a Third? They might just laugh it off and…’ Boris stops pacing at a sudden thought. ‘Wait a minute, with how everyone treated me, I might be better off staying here, wherever here is. Perhaps there is a town nearby that can give me some information.’ With that, Boris set off in some random direction in the hopes of coming across someone that can help him.
