I wouldn't worry about making the story uber long - the main thing is you have fun writing it. The higher the word count, the more tedious to becomes to proof-read, so you may want to keep that in mind. I did this once with a story on another forum that ended up at over 140k words - I'll never volunteer to do that again, I can assure you.

Yeah, 140k words is well beyond novel length and I don't recommend you use that as any kind of bar for writing (a novel is typically 40k - 50k words minimum). Short and sweet is what most people look for - which is why many stories submitted on dA are less than 5k words. Make the story too long and people won't bother to invest the time necessary to finish reading it.
