Investigators:
The Investigators were once the Ps'isol Magiocrats secret police but are now a less aggressive organization tasked with administrating and surveying mage academies and artefact research; including the dig site known as Interneringskamp 6. They are also responsible for keeping track of the fluxing mage population and some security aspects of Negav; acting as an idependent intelligence and policing angency; assisting other organisations such as the Isolon's Fists.
The Investigators were originally conceived as a way for the Magiocrats to secure their rule over Negav without needless bureaucracy. It was decided to entrust a select group of powerful mages and nobles with the task of keeping constant surveillance of the general population. This freed up time for the Magiocrats to find ways to further their own needs and ends. Setting up the Investigators was also a way for the Magiocrats to keep a very close eye on these affluent persons by having them work for them. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer. The promise of ascending to the level of Psisol Magiocrat and the want to fulfil their own lust for power made many of the selected nobles and mages take the invitation and agree to the Magiocrat's terms, thus the Investigators were born. To ensure no one became too powerful within the organization; the Magiocrats would usually have several Investigators bide for the same position.
After years or internal power struggles, backstabbing and eventual executions the Investigators eventually matured into a core of personnel wholly loyal to the Magiocrats. Further members were recruited from the many mage academies found in Negav; personally selected by the heads of the organization. To be chosen for the Investigators was and still is a great honour, though it was a heavy commitment, usually resulting in lifelong servitude to the Magiocrats and the organisation itself. As Negav changed with time so did the Investigators the arrival of peoples like the Vishmitals who possessed their own ambitions of power required the Investigators to become more aggressive; The Metropolitan Security Divison was set up; under the command of the Internal Security Division which already included both Site Secuirty and the Intelligence Division. The Metropolitan Security Divison was tasked with preserving both the secrecy of the Magiocrats and their hold on power. Information was tightly controlled, dissidents disappeared. For decades the Metropolitan Security Divison with the help of the Intelligence Divison subjugated the residence of Negav to Magiocrat rule; while force was used in a limited and subtle fashion its use proved very effective. During this time all internal security duties for Negav were undertaken by the Investigators' Internal Security Division and preformed by the Metropolitan Security Division; however they only acted on the whims of their Magiocrat masters. While obviously corrupt, no one dared challenge them openly; those who tried were arrested and never seen again.
However certain events brought political change; the most notable was the storming of Interneringskamp 6, which left many key Vishmital leaders dead. The populace of Negav quickly became disgusted with the Investigators' actions, some pointing fingers at the Magiocrat's themselves. Fears of revolution eventually forced the Magiocrats to shorten the leash of the Investigators; the Metropolitan Security Divison was dispanded and replaced by the smaller Public Security Company, which focused more on criminal investigation as well as major crime prevention. General security details were handed over to more conventional policing units, many under the control of the Vishmitals and other powerful groups. The biggest upheaval came once the Isolon Eye was completed giving the Magiocrats a far more peaceful guarantee of rule of Negav. No longer needing a large secret police; the Investigators changed once again; the Internal Security Division was decreased in size while the Education and Research Division, a small department already growing in size due to their control of Interneringskamp 6 became the main attraction for new recruits. The increase in personnel joining the Education and Research Divison gave the Investigators a large pool of mages still connected with the many academies and schools allowing them to exert their influence on these institutions by promising them access to their resouces including artefacts from Interneringskamp 6; a move which pleased both the mages and many of the 'old gaurd' in the Intelligence Division. Thus the Investigators became more and more of an administrative body than one of enforcement. Their last major security operation led by Public Security was the crushing of the smugglers guild; a black market which almost began to rival the legal markets in economic power. While popular with many adventures the smugglers guild infuriated the Magiocrats by avoiding their taxes and duties, the situation worsened when it became apparent that the guild had obtained illegal and powerful magical artefacts; some from Interneringskamp 6. Over the course of a week the Investigators raided dozens of locations and made almost sixty arrests; thanks to bribed informants and counter intelligence personnel of the Intelligence Division; traitors within their own ranks were removed, and the guild's leadership was shattered, their fortunes seized.
Notable personnel:
Lady Visaria Jade: Once a counter intelligence officer; Lady Jade rose through the ranks to become head of Interrogation within the Intelligence Division thanks to her ambition and magical abilities. Visaria soon rose to command the Intelligence Divison itself before becoming a member of the Command Council. Yet this was not enough for her; and eventually she ascended to the Ps’isol Magiocrats after recognition of her century of loyal service, though some say it was due to her connections and ‘persuasive methods.’ After being initiated as a Magiocrat, Lady Jade returned to the Investigators and assumed leadership. Her endorsement by her friend Lady Lesona has caused a stir due to her ambitions of returning the Investigators to their former position.
Epsom: Born into an affluent family Epsom took leadership of the Investigators during its transition period to a more civil organization after serving as both a field agent, analyst and security adviser within the old Metropolitan Security Division. While not a powerful mage he is experienced and wise when it comes to matters of security and intelligence. Epsom is one of the few members within the Investigators who aren’t frozen with fear by Lady Jade. Though he voluntarily stepped down as leader upon her return to the organization, he does serve as her second in command and adviser. Having served the Investigators through much of its history, Epsom views their fall from power as an insult.
