D.N.A and E.S.C

Dimensional Nursing Association (D.N.A) is a medical association that provides healthcare for off-world patients whose illnesses are serious or incurable with the medical technology of their own world.

Their treatment for these patients is simple as they only need to transport them to Felarya and let the magical soil does its job. Meanwhile, D.N.A will protect their patients from Felarya’s dangers. Their service is costly, but it also means they are well-armed enough to fend off common predators.

Since D.N.A makes use of dimensional crossing a lot, their military-like bases often locates near dimensional gates in Felarya, both mapped and unmapped.

Patients under their care often come back to their feet and then get transported back to their own world in a very healthy state. However, in some rare case, in which patients may risk to collapse upon leaving the Felarya’s healing atmosphere, or they do not want to leave Felarya for some reason, D.N.A will let them choose: to stay or to leave.

If they choose to stay in Felarya, D.N.A will offer them escort service to safer local places, but with pretty low chance of success. The escorting teams are hired by Escort Service Company (E.S.C) – a member of D.N.A, and often comprise of local mercenaries and guides who are willing take the risk for high payment, if they survive the task.

While most of predators can only look and drool at D.N.A’s camps, packed with humans but heavy-armed, they are gladly to take on E.S.C’s teams who sometimes come out of the gate with lighter firearms.

===

Lisardggy

For adventures who ventures into Miragia Forest - the famous forest with unstable dimension, if they ever see an unusual small tree standing amidst other gigantic trunks, they must never approach it. For it may be a special species of plant called Lisardggy

Lisardggy is dangerous, not because it is a carnivorous plant, but because its unique ability: space-compressing. The space around Lisardggy always gets compressed from time to time, creating a small sub-space surrounding the trees. This sub-space size varies from about a few miles to as vast as the sea, depending how old the tree is.

Once an adventure approaches a Lisardggy, he will get pulled into its sub-space and find himself lost in a very vast place. If he is lucky that the sub-space itself is small enough, or he ends up at near the edge of the sub-space, he can escape with ease. However, in case that he is unlucky, he will have to travel for hours, days, months or even years to escape from the sub-space. Needless to say, if he is unprepared, his doom will be a certainty.

Many adventurers have been stuck into these spaces, and only a few escaped it. All of these survivors told a same strange tale: these sub-spaces are actually the different versions of Felarya itself. One of them said that he saw an industrial Felarya, with robotic predators and mechanic trees. Another said that he witnessed the whole Felarya world getting engulfed in an all-out war between predators and preys.

For that reason, the tree is named Lisardggy – the backward word of Yggdrasil the World Tree, to imply that these trees are the sub-worlds of Felarya.

===

Scaredy Cactus

This kind of cactus can grow very tall, enough to see it from very far away. However, using it as a landmark in travelling is a very bad idea.

Scaredy Cactus has a strange habit: uprooting and moving away when it senses something approaching it. Its movement is slow enough to be unnoticeable from afar.

People who follow it either never reach it if the plant moves further away, or get leaded astray if the plant moves sideway.

Following a cactus is never a good idea in a desert, as that cactus is either a normal one, a scaredy one, or even worse, a Cactus Dryad. For that reason, in Akaptor desert, cactus is symbol of trickery and partly truth, and local people use cactus as a word to imply someone or something untrustworthy.

For example: “The cactus is a lie”, or “You can trust him as must as you trust a cactus”

===

Wound-eater

Wound-eater is an extremely rare plant, and looks like a big blue bell hanging lazily on high tree branches with its long vines. The plant can only be found in the wilderness.

Wound-eater is a strange plant, as it behaves like a carnivorous plant, but it does not eat people. It only ‘eat’ one thing from them: wounds.

Normally, it does not care about anything happens below. However, when a person with some kind of wound on their body (ex: a broken leg) passes by, it will drop down on that person and swallow him. Instead of pulling up, Wound-eater grows roots and attached itself to the ground.

When the wounded person is secure inside, it fills up itself a special liquid with strong healing property, oxygen and anesthetic. The person will go into a deep and relaxing sleep, while the plant cures his wounds. The plant will automatically release the person when all of his wounds are cure and pull back to the branch.

While the plant can be used as a healing capsule to treat heavy-wounded people, its habit of constraining people may pose some indirect problems. No one wants to be cured a cut on his finger while a giant naga is chasing after him.

Oh lot of great ideas here ^_^

The faeries are interesting, I like how it somehow explains the fairy hunter job.
I really like both the Whirling Clover and Roller Sucker!  Somehow they are very easy to visualize and original. great job here Smile

Banshee Earthworm are interesting too ^^ their way of hunting is original. The Lisardggy is really nice and would fit just well in the region. I'm just not too sure about alternate / mecha versions of Felarya though XD

Great job! Razz

Hm, after thinking again, I admit that the 'other Felarya' is a bit stretching. I guess that part is not necessary ^^

Telegrass

Telegrass is a small plant with twin arrow-shaped leaves, one red and one blue. The plant can be found growing scarcely across Felarya where it can shy away from direct sunlight.
Its leaves when eaten leave a lingering sweetness one’s tongue. However, the plant is noticeable for one special feature: if two people eating leaves of a same plant, they can temporarily communicate with each other via thought! In one word: Telepathy.
The telepathy can be kept up for a good distance. The duration is varied, but it last as long as the sweetness still lingers on the two eaters’ taste buds.
However, the telepathy will not happen in three cases: two people eating leaves from two different plants; eating another leaves of the same plant while the link is existing; and the sweetness getting cleaned away or overwritten by another strong taste.
With practice, people can use the plant as a way to communicate in place where other ways of communication are not available, as long as the two eaters make sure that they use leaves from the same plant, and are not too far away to each other. Another noticeable use is that people who work in group may consider using the plant as a way to secretly give command and coordinate their acts.
Finally, in case of the plant has somehow lost its ability of telepathy establishment, its leftover leaves can still be sold as sweets to children.

===

Poisograss

Poisograss is a rare plant that loves to grow in poisonous environment or on something that contains poison.  For this reason, people can often found it sticking on poisonous plants and animals.
Poisograss’s special characteristic lies in the ability to produce cure agaist the poison that it absorb, making it a cure-all solution against all types of poison, both Felarya-native and from other worlds. It can also make remedy for poisoned people by letting it directly touch the victim’s blood within half of a hour.
However, despite of being a perfect solution to deal with poison, the only problem is that whether the victim of a poison incident can last before the plant can produce the remedy. Therefore, it only works well on slow-acting poison.
Another problem is that the plant is pretty expensive, because herb gathers often have trouble to get them as they only grow on places with poison, such as the roots of a Bramble Dryad.

The Ninety-nine Bag

This extremely rare item is only released 99 units for every nine 99 year in Felarya via black market route. The bag is enchanted with special dimensional magic that can virtually store everything inside it no matter of the size, and the owner can pull out what they want by just thinking about the item when putting their hand inside the bag.

Another cool thing about this pack is that it preserves the condition of the items stored inside. One can put a live fish into the bag, and pull it out still alive 100 years later.

However, it has a strange characteristic: It can only store at a maximum of 99 items at once. By putting the 100th item inside, something terrible is said to happen, but no one is actually know what it is. Some said the bag will explode; some said the bag will spit out everything inside and potentially crush the owner to death if they are heavy enough; some even bizarrely claimed that a dimension rift will appear and swallow everything in the surroundings, including the unlucky owner.

There is an old document in Negav’s mythical library saying about a story about 99 neko assassins hiding themselves inside the Ninety-Nine bag and successfully conducting 99 assassination cases, until a curious tomthumb ventured inside the bag during their 100th job. The document said nothing about that happened, though.

Spitfire

Spitfire is a weed grown in wilderness of Felarya. It prefer sunny places, making it quite a rare plant in deeper part of forests where the sun can hardly shine on, but can be found grow plenty in places such as the Great Rocky field.

The entire plant from stem to leaves has a color of bright red, making it quite visible to notice.

When being chewed on, its leaves make the chewers feel so warm that their cheek turns red as if they are drunk. In addition, after chewing Spitfire, the chewers can spit out fire, literally, as the leftover of the leaves will burn itself as a chemical reaction when being exposed to the air after absorbing a good amount of a certain substance in the chewer's saliva.

The plant is often used as a body warmer by adventurers who venture into cold places. It can act like a make-shift weapon too, as the fire spit can cause quite a burn to whoever touches it.

Interestingly, there is a myth about fire-spitting slug girls. In reality, they are just normal slug girls who use Spitfire's leaves to enhance their spitting attack to fend off dangers, if they can get their hands on these rare leaves.

PostSubject: Tanuki   tkh1304's Tome of Creativity - Page 2 Icon_minitimeFri Jun 20, 2014 10:07 am

(This version of Tanuki is considered outdated by me)

Tanuki

1. Basic:

Tanuki is a humanoid species who specializes in transformation magic and often lives in disguise near human settlements across Felarya.

Through leading a hidden lifestyle, Tanukis are still well-known as mischief-makers and extraordinary healers.

2. Appearance:

A Tanuki’s true appearance is similar to human, but with raccoon dog’s ears and stripped tail, which sometimes make people mistake them for an inu from behind. But there is a noticeable signs that can help distinguish between them: a Tanuki has darker skin area around the eyes.

Normally, Tanukis take appearance of other species like humans and nekos. They only show their true forms when they feel safe or to people whom they trust, which are usually their relatives, close friends and lover.

3. Size:

Tanukis living near people are often spotted to be at humanoid size. However, there are reports about tiny and giant Tanukis in deeper parts of Felarya.

It is debatable whether there are actually tiny and giant-sized Tanukis, as Tanuki’s transformation magic can alter their size too.

4. Shape-shifting:

Tanukis are natural-born shape-shifters who not only can take appearance of people, but also of animals and inanimate objects.

Even Tanuki babies can transform themselves to various items, mostly household ones which catch their eyes. However, shape-shifting performed by amateurs often has flaws, such as a vase that still has ears and tail.

There is a certain size restriction in Tanuki’s shape-shifting ability, making them to only transform into someone or something not too small or too big. However, it is said that the size restriction can be lifted through intense training, enable more freedom in size-shifting, which may be the reason for giant size or tiny size Tanukis. This happens to elder tanukis are master shape-shifters. In extreme cases, some powerful enough elder Tanukis are believed to be able transform themselves into part of Felarya landscape, resulting “fake” mountains, hills, lakes and forests that can play trick on lost travellers.

To perform the transformation magic, Tanukis need a clean state of mind and vivid imagination of the person or the object they want to turn into, or else their transformation will end up into something with flaws. In order to teach a Tanuki child entering such states, parents put a leaf on his or her head and ask the child to do a back flip without dropping the leaf as a way to boost their concentration. After mastering the skill, the child will no longer need to go through such steps. However, some Tanuki adults still do these steps out of habit, resulting in a misconception that Tanukis need a special kind of leaf and do a back flip to transform.

When taking form of a person, a skilled Tanuki can turn into a perfect copy that possesses both appearance and abilities of the original. However, the transformed Tanuki may not be able to use abilities of the mentioned person. Turning herself as a mage does not enable a Tanuki to use the mage’s magic freely, unless the Tanuki practices to use it in that form. This characteristic usually happens when a Tanuki takes shape of another species for the first time: a Tanuki-turned mermaid will not how to swim and breath underwater like a real mermaid at first; but if given time to practice, that Tanuki-mermaid will slowly be able to swim as good as the mermaid she copied.

It should be known that Tanuki can also transform into a fully-clothed person. However, the “clothes” are still parts of their body, so it will hurt them if the “clothes” get damaged.

As mentioned above, Tanuki can also take shapes of inanimate objects. Even more interestingly, Tanuki in their object form can still speak and move around, giving an impression of haunted items and are also ones of their favourite pranks.

For animal transformation, Tanuki prefers something big and scary (like a Kensha Beast) to scare people, but there are cases that Tanukis turning into something cute and small (interestingly, they often to turn into racoon dog!) to make people drop their guard. They can speak in their animal form, of course.

While Tanukis have it easier to transform than other species using shape-shifting magic, there are cases that Tanukis lose their ability to transform  temporarily after experiencing something traumatic while taking shapes of other people, animals or things. Fortunately, such Tanukis can still speak and move around, though it is pretty inconvenience. Stuck-in-one-own-transformation is often happens to both child and adult Tanukis, so do not be surprise if you visit a Tanuki’s family (assumed you gain their trust) and found yourself greeting a talking kettle!

Another flaw in Tanuki’s shape-shifting ability: they cannot turn into something they have never seen before. Photos and painting are no use, as they need to see the people or things with their own eyes in order to have a perfect transformation

Finally, a Tanuki can take appearance of another Tanuki, but they seldom to do it as it is pretty dangerous. When a Tanuki does such things, there is a chance that that the Tanuki’s body will forget his or her own original form and always turn back to another Tanuki’s appearance. The only way to reverse this is showing the troubled Tanuki his or her original appearance using his own imagination about the older body. Photos and drawing may help for better results.

5. Other noticeable traits:

Tanuki has a good affinity with illusion magic. Combining with their own transformation ability, they can give other people a hell of pranks or escape from dangers.

It is a less common fact, but Tanuki is somrtimes known as an extraordinary herbalists.  Possessing broad knowledge on medical herbs around Felarya and their own traditional recipes, Tanuki can quickly fix most of body disorders and wounds. They are also experts at detecting voracious and poisonous plants in Felarya’s wilderness.

In addition, Tanuki also know to use plants to greatly enhance the taste their meals, making them good chefs too.

6. Diet:

Tanuki’s voraciousness on smaller creatures are dependent on the society they live in. If they live in a neko village where people see nothing wrong with eating tiny folk, then they will eat these morsels just fine. If they live in a human settlement where people think such act being barbaric, then they are contented for a diet without any tiny folk. In both case, tiny Tanuki are spared from their menu.

Meanwhile, giant Tanukis in wilderness are reported to also eat bite-sized people just like other predators. They avoid cannibalism, though.

7. Lifestyle:

*Relationship with other species:
Aside from giant Tanukis prefer living by themselves for more convenient hunting and tiny Tanukis stay with other tiny folk in deeper depth of Felarya to be safe from bigger predators, humanoid-size Tanukis tend to disguise themselves as local sentient creatures in safe settlement across Felarya. Though it is rare, but humanoid-size Tanukis can also be spotted living in wilderness with mermaids, harpies, etc.

Tanukis can mimic virtually every species where they live and fit the setting so much that no one can really tell the differences, expect Inus and Kitsunes.

Inus can easily see through a Tanuki’s transformation with their sharp sense. As tanukis dislike having their real identification discovered without their permission (which can be compared to the feeling of a human girl having her naked body seen by strangers), Tanukis considers Inus as rude people and tend to avoid them. Dogs with good nose can also do the same, but since dogs are animals, so Tanuki do not take it to heart.

(Proverb: “An inu comes to where a tanuki leaves” to imply a situation where two people are never at the same place, even if they try to)

Meanwhile, Tanuki has a rivalry sense with Kitsunes, who are also tricksters, so their pride does not allow themselves to transform into Kitsunes.

(Proverb: “Like Tanuki and Kitsune” to imply two people that cannot get along with each other)
(Proverb: “It is always a fairy that ended the fight between a tanuki and a kitsune”, saying that the fight between two people will benefit the third one)

*Pranks is to show affection:

Most of Tanuki who plays pranks on local people are children, but it does not mean that adult Tanukis do not. In contrast, adult Tanukis still sometimes makes pranks, but more skillfully and in bigger scale than children’s tricks.
As natural-born mischief-makers, playing prank integrates deeply into Tanuki’s culture as a good act. Teasing someone is Tanuki’s own way to show their affection. The more they like, the more pranks they play, though if the person who get played with is a person of another species, he or she will find such affection annoying. In addition, playing prank is also used as a contest between Tanukis to solve their daily problems.

Unlike what people often said, ignoring Tanuki’s franks will not make them cease their acts. It will make them think that their affection is not enough and will work even more pranks. The only way to make a Tanuki stop bothering you is finding the Tanuki in question (which is difficult without an Inu’s assist) and has a good face-to-face talking to make him give up on you, though the success is pretty much unguaranteed.

(Proverb: “Tanuki’s love” implying someone who expresses their love throught ways that trouble the person he/she loves)

*Marrying a Tanuki:
A Tanuki usually marries another Tanuki, but it is not uncommon for a Tanuki to couple with a local resident who accepts his or her true form. Marriage life with a Tanuki can be a fun experience because of the Tanuki’s shape-shifting ability and habit of playing frank to show affection. One should learn to respect every household items in his or her house, as you never know which ones of them are actually your beloved wife/husband and kids. Not mentioning that their cooking skills are top-notch too.

However, if you have a Tanuki’s wife or husband, you should never try to ask them to turn into another man or woman. Aside from being mischief-makers, Tanukis are actually good-hearted and passionate people, but they can also feel jealous enough to that make his/her partner’s life turn upside down.  The mentioned-above act will be consider as a sign of cheating, and you would not want to know what your marriage partner that can shape-shift, has knowledge about poisonous plants and possess illusion magic can do to you.

(Proverb: “She/he has the heart of a tanuki”, implying someone with passionate love and boundary-less jealousy)
*Elder Tanukis:
Elder Tanukis are master shape-shifter to a degree that it is said that even size restriction gets loosened for them. Their appearance can be also deceiving if they choose to take the appearance in their younger age. If one find a talking kettle is surprising, he should prepare to have his jaw dropped when knowing that the little tanuki child who is mediating in a corner is even older than his great grandfather.

Their illusion magic and wisdom, especially on plants, are also exceptional. Younger tanukis often seek for their consulting when encountering problems.

Though still sometimes playing prank, these elder spend more time to mediate as away a lot to explore their inner world. At a certain point of their life, many of them leave their families behind and venture into the wilderness in order to become “part of Felarya”. A way of seeking enlightenment, in short.

According to tanuki’s tales, there are three ways that an elder tanuki can become part of Felarya
First, the elder tanuki will transform herself into part of Felarya’s landscape to experience the Mother Nature to the closest level. A patch of forest, a lake, a spring, a hill or even a mountain somewhere in Felarya can be actually the transformation of an elder tanuki. Even being one with the nature, the blood of a mischief-maker still flow inside the elder tanuki, making her to sometimes rain down tricks on travellers. However, a sign of a landscape tanuki means that at least the land is safe, as the tanuki only play pranks and do not eat people. On occasion, landscape tanuki spends their time grow garden of precious herbs on their landscape body, making themselves a good source of herb supply for other herbalists.

Second, the elder tanuki will choose to live as a giant predator in order to experience as one to higher in Felarya’s food chain. Despite of often having youthful appearance, a giant tanuki is a dangerous predator and is difficult to deal with due to her powerful shape-shifting ability, illusion magic and cunning mind. In addition, her sense of voraciousness also twists the original purpose of playing prank from a way of showing affection on people to a way to show her sadism on preys! So when encountering a giant tanuki, poor travellers will experience a hell of pranks and trickery enough to make their mind break before getting eaten.
Finally, though being the least common choice, there are elder tanukis decide to experience the life of creatures in bottom of food chain by shirking themselves to tiny size and live together with tiny folk in disguise.  Tiny tanukis observe how tiny people adapt to the harshness of Felarya’s food chain, sometimes offer tiny people their wisdom and may lend a hand help fend off dangers that threaten the tiny settlement. An average humanoid-size predator who attack a tiny settlement where a tiny tanuki presents would have a very bad day instead of a full stomach. However, tiny tanukis have their power also scaled down along with their size, making them more vulnerable.

In all three cases mentioned above, elder tanukis who have chosen their way of life will never return to their previous life as humanoid-size tanukis and stick to their size selection to the end of their life.

*Tanuki adventurers:
Most tanukis prefers a peaceful life in the settlement they choose. However, there are still tanukis with adventurous spirit that want to explore the world in their young age, or simply want to find out about the life of elder tanukis having left their family behind.

Tanuki adventurers never travel alone for a reason: they need someone to play pranks on during their journey. Therefore, they take appearance of other species and mix themselves in a group of other travellers or go duo with someone they trust. In either cases, people who accompany with a tanuki should expect to have troubled time with their pranks.

While the pranks may get annoying, a presence of a tanuki in the group can be considered as luck, as hidden tanukis will try their best to protect the group from dangers. Tanukis is good at detecting from man-eating plants, act as good herbalists to treat wounds and cure poisons, and can confuse predators with their tricks.

In addition, tanukis do not commit cannibalism, so having a tanuki will help that group being eaten by giant tanukis.

However, if there is the presence of inus or kitsunes in a group, travellers of that group should never expect to have such helpful and hidden protectors, as tanukis dislike the two mentioned species enough to avoid travelling with them at all costs.

I love the Tanuki race!! They have so much potentila for both humor and stories. I love all the detail on their relationships to other races and the world around them and I love how their power of shape shifting can get them into even more trouble than they get others into. XD Stuck as a tea kettle. I loved that bit about having to talk to a tea kettle to get to know the elder of the house. Very amusing! I also like the distrust of Inu's and Nekos! Not something you see every day that. All in all? I want me a Tanuki!! X3 Can I haz one?

It's Inus and Kitsunes that Tanukis distrust! A fun fact is that these three species all belongs to Canine Family : P

Sure that you can have one. First, you should start talking to your kettle to see if it is a tanuki or not ^^

Gah I knew it Inu's and Kitsunes. I typed that up late at night and probably didn't even notice. I know that! I loved that too. Now there are three canines type species. ^U^ Really awesome that!

Yay! Going to draft a sheet as soon as I can think up a non-typical character as I try to do with all species in Felarya. X3 already consulted Aunt Whistler and she said it was quite okay. She and the salt shaker have been quite lonely lately. =P

Tonobane

Tonabane is a species of predatory insect with long body, blue-colored glossy chitin and a pair of mantis-like pincers. Its size was on par with an adult Tonorian, or sometimes an Abyssal one.

Its carapace is extremely hard and can resist shockwave and magic-based attacks. The downsize of such tough armor is that Tonobane move extremely slow.

Tonobane’s diet is Tonorians – one of creatures in higher food chain, and sometimes other giant predators if Tonobane is lucky enough. Tonobane is very heavy, so every step of its results in a small tremor, which potentially angers an burrowing Tonorian to surface and attacks the invader. When that happens, Tonobane will raise both of pincers on the air for a long while, aiming at the angry Tonorians that are attacking its tough armor in vain. The moment Tonobane gathers enough strength, it will slam its pincer onto the target with force strong enough to crush through even Tonorian’s infamous hard chitin, instantly killing it. Even if the attack does not connect, the shockwave created when the pincers are slam onto the ground will enter through the Tonorian’s hard armor and destroy its organs from inside, killing it or make it too crippled to counter attack. If there are multi Tonorians presenting nearby, the shockwave can also cause daze, damage or even death to them depending on the distance from the attack. The fight often end in only one attack, and Tonobane will brutally feast on the losers by crushing them pieces to pieces.

Needless to say, the shockwave caused by the Tonobane are often fatal to human-sized creatures if they wander too close to where the slam is. Even at safe distance, ones can also feel nausea and lose balance due to the tremor coming along with the shockwave. Fighting against a Tonobane is recommended one of most reckless things to do in Felarya.

However, Felarya’s nature balances Tonobane’s fearsome power by making it a very slow creature. Everything it does takes a long time, from walking to attacking. It also ignore human-sized prey and only goes after giant-size ones, though this means that they do not mind overrun some villages on its path as an slow but inevitable destroyers. For its slowness, it can be easily outrun by sentient predators who wish no fight against it. In addition, its shockwave attacks can be avoid or significantly negate by making a timely jump out of the ground when the attacks hit the ground, though it is advised to avoid fighting it at all costs.

Good things about this predator of predator? Tonobane is rare to meet, and is the natural nemesis of Tonorian that can keeps the Tonorian’s population in check.

As sentient predators tend to avoid Tonobane, travellers can follow it for a safer path, but smaller predators can still bypass Tonobane’s food category. In addition, it is extremely dangerous if Tonobane engages a fight with Tonorians as the shockwave can kill or seriously wound anything and anyone near the fight.

Storm Squirrel

Storm Squirrel is a small squirrel-like creatures with bushy tail, grey furs with two blue-and-silver stripes along the body and big blue eyes. The most noticeable feature is that Storm Squirrel has a small transparent pouch hanging its neck like a bell.

Storm Squirrel can be spotted climbing and jumping between trees in areas with fallen nuts, just like a normal squirrel. However, Storm Squirrel is not something easy to pick on: It stores mana gathered from Felarya’s soil little by little until the pouch is full and shines in dim blue light. If feels being threatened, it will spin around once and create a brief, small but powerful tornado that can easily blast away anything at right size, hence its name as “Storm Squirrel”. A fully charge pouch can execute the attack for a few times before running out of mana, requiring Storm Squirrel to recharge it. The charging progress may take a few day if the pouch is completely empty, making Storm Squirrel vulnerable again predators.

Storm Squirrel only attacks like mentioned above for self-defense. Normally, they are gentle herbivorous creature that like to chews nuts and fruits, and can be tamed as pet with the assistance of some mana draining or magic disabling tools. Since these tools are expensive, Storm Squirrel is often tamed as pet for children of noble people, and also as their protector thanks to the creature’s special ability.

In wilderness, there are some tomthumb tribes manage to be friend with Storm Squirrels, which greatly boosts their defense against human-sized predators like nekos. When the tribe is in dangers, tomthumbs ride Storm Squirrels, of which mana pouch fully charged, to the fray and strategically use the tornado-creating ability to ward off enemies. Since tomthumbs rider is at the center of the tornado, they are usually safe from their own tornado attacks.

Sun Eye

Nexocula is a kind corpse-eating butterfly that I made some time ago. They can liquidify everything belongs to a corpse, from skin to bone, leaving aside the clothes and equipments of the consumed corpse. Since they attract by the smell of corpses and would-dead people, the sight of them flying around someone is a death omen

There is a small plant called Sun's eye. It has no leaf and branch, only a one-foot-wide golden flower with a big black dot in the middle, with its stem connected directly to the root. It looked like an golden eye sprout out of the ground, and gives off a slight bittersweet fragrance. It prefers sunny place, and the black dot on the flower will move toward the direction of the Sun, and goes back to the middle when the sun is down.

Nexocula dislikes this flower and never wanders where the flower grows. It is said that the eyes on these butterfly's wings get dazed and rolled wildly whenever they stared at Sun Eye, effectively warding them off. It is literally "An Eye for an Eye"

In order to prevent Nexoculas visiting wounded or dying people, their families and friend grow live plants or hang dried flower around, so that these butterflies cannot bring death omen. Though death still comes when the time is right, it gives people a better hope.

Additionally, the plant also prevents any corpse pests like maggots and flies attacking the exposed corpse with its fragrance, so it is important in some funeral ceremonies. It is also a good idea to keep some Sun Eye to fly-prone places, such as the kitchen.

The plant also has different names, such as Deathward for it being able to repell Death's messenger, or Fly-ridder for getting rid of flies.

Sea Dumbbell

Sea Dumbbell is a giant undersea plant that grows into a big stem from a heavy coconut-shaped fruit that takes root on the sea floor.

It has a lot of blue sea-weed like leaves sprouted from the stem, and the end of the stem grows a red waterproof-skinned fruit that looks like the one from the root. The round fruit is lighter than water, so it always hover upward to the sea's surface, but is held down by the root, making it look like a standing dumbbell, hence the name. However, the fruit will keep growing and growing through decades until the fruit is too big for the root to hold down: the fruit will yank itself from the stem and float toward the surface and stay afloat for months.

During its floating period on the ocean following the waves, the seawater will slowly enter the fruit through the crack until the fruit is too heavy to float and sink to the ocean floor again, where the fruit will once take root and repeating the cycle of its life.

Due to their giant size, in spite of their lightness, these Sea Dumbell's  floating fruits are dangerous to ships that cross their path, and can potentially damage or even sink a ship that crash into them. It is also something that Mermaid would use for throwing.

However, Sea Dumbbells are considered to be a delicate treats among giant sea-dwellers, especially when they are nearly ripe. Their hard shell can be broken with force with a hard rock, leaving the white content floating upward, which can be sucked directly. The fruit's meat taste cool and sweet like ice-cream underwater. For land-dwellers who pull this fruit ashore, the content is fluffy and has soft texture, which can be turned into a cooling dessert that is sought by children during hot months. It is called "Cloud Cream" for its cloud-like texture.

The Festival of Three Moons

Velicina is an Angel who are specialized in size-shifting magic. Being an Angel, she always wonders about the morality of the eater and the eaten in Felarya, which revolves around the bigger eating the smaller. She believes that if the preds and the preys can contact with each other at an equal size, they may come to an understanding and even be friends, thus improving the world's morality

As an Angel, she can create a dimensional realm for herself, and she decides to turn her home into a festival ground where preds and preys can get along with each other. Filled with size-equalizing magic, everyone of every size enters this realm will be shrunken/enlarged to human-size. A giant naga and and a tiny tomthumb will be as big as a human here. This magic will also be applied on fairy and people who know size-shifting magic, so that they cannot change their size at will during their stay in the festival.

The festival ground has many games that are designed so that every species can participate. There are also spells that allows land-dwellers to comfortably interact with water-dweller and sky-dwellers by allowing them to breath underwater or flying. Meanwhile, to not limit water-dwellers, species like mermaids can "swim" in the air if they want. Food and drink will be served for free, and there are also souvenirs given to festival-attending people.

Still, as the festival is meaned to blur the size difference between preds and preys, violence is not allowed to prevent revenge taking places. Anyone commits violence will get booted to a certain prison area where Velicina will judge the violators. If necessary, she will boot the violators back to where they come from. For people who purposely try to foil the festival, she gives them heavier punishment: a free port to a random place in Felarya.

The festival is held annually when three full moons happen on Felaryan sky, which is the time where Velicina's power is at its peak. Hence the name of the festival. For the rest of the year, she prepares candidates for the next festival. As an angel, she is good at choosing good-hearted people to send porting-to-festival invitation tickets. These tickets can be only activated by the invited, but it can also be used to bring along two extra people, so that the guests can bring their friends with them. Still, there are cases of the guests bring non-friend people (being threatened, the slots are sold...), which Velicina will step in if necessary. These tickets also act as a returning tickets, though Velicina does not mind to offer some help in case of ticket loss.

Felaryan natives have a mixed feeling about the festival. For man-size people, the festival looks like a place where predator sympathizers gather. There are even rumours that it is actually where predators go meet and study about potential preys. There are also people who attempt to infiltrate the  festival bringing mass-destruction weapons with them in order to "destroy as many as possible man-eating creatures in the name of justice and a safer Felarya", and such a crime is quickly and heavily punished by Velicina who always have a close watch on her guests. She is good at discovering good people, so she does with bad people.

About predators, they do not often like the idea about attending a place where they are at the same size with their preys. Some are paranoid enough to avoid the festival, because they're afraid of being shrunken forever or get mistreated by opportunistic preys.

Even so, there are still many people who appreciate this unique festival. As most of invited guests are good-hearted, it often does not take them much time to get along with each other in spite of size differences. Adventurers think this festival a good chance to be friends with predators to boost their survivability in Felarya. Meanwhile, predators can feast to the fullness delicious cooked food and drink, something that they hardly have a chance to taste in their daily life.

If you ever discover a golden ticket with the three-moon symbol ticket placed neatly next to your bed when waking up, it is time to invite friends to the festival where size matter is not something to worry about.

Pretty nicely written! Love the detail that it's "pupil" follows the sun! XD Somebody should put sunglasses on it. =p

Great ideas here Smile

I especially like the Tonobane. A predator for tonorion is a good idea and i realized there is very few Felarya creatures using tremors as a mean of hunting ^^ I just wonder what they do look like ?

And the storm squirrel is a fun one ^^ I like the theme of small harmless looking creatures but who can surprise larger ones with original means of defense.

Thanks for your comment : P

For Tonobane, it is inspired by Mantis Shrimp. So I believe it can be seen as a glossy-blue mantis shrimp on the land. Still, Tonobane belongs to insect family ^^

And, that's why you shouldn't mess with squirrels XD

Preyish

Preyish is the name of a giant fruit-bearing tree that are commonly found around Felarya jungle. Its height varies from 60 to 100 feet. Its bark is grey but often seencovered with blue moss. Every three to five years, the tree bears 30-50 peach-liked fruits with the size of a car and a big seed in themiddle. The fruits give off pleasant fragrance.

The reason of its name “Preyish” isthat its fruits is considered as preys on predator sense. Each fruit gives off aura similar to that of a human-size creature, which often tricks predators who make use of their natural predator sense. Since Preyish bears a lot of fruits per season, each tree can give off aura as equivalent to a small settlement. Predators who comes to the site, hoping to get a feast will found no morsel, but a lot of Preyish fruits instead. The compensation is that these fruits are pretty tasty, so it is not really a bad deal. Predators who eat the fruits often throw away the hard seed, which will grow into another Preyish tree.

Preyish is consider a blessed tree toFelaryan native, because every time the tree bears fruits, it becomes safer to travel through the jungle, as predators get tricked into eating these fruits instead of people. It is advised to stay away from where Preyish trees grow in its fruiting season, though, because predators arrive to the site on a frequent basic. Some daring adventurers, however, take advantage on the saying “The most dangerous place is the safest place” to take shelter nearby, as predators often have trouble to detect preys on the presence ofPreyish fruits.

Predator with trained sense can still tell the difference between Preyish fruits and tasty morsels, though.

Ever-remembrance

Ever-remembrance is a grass plant with height varied from 3-6 feet and can be found grown in patches in darkwoods. Its flower has the shape of water lily, but its petal glows an eerie green light in the dark.

Ever-remembrance has such a name because its flower has the ability to store memory of thesurrounding. It can also projects the memory it has stored in form ofvague and inconsistent green holocasts when there is disturbance in mana, such as when a mage casts his spell nearby or a magical creatures pass by the area. The memory it projects is often random and disturbing, like the image of ghostly shapes of creatures passingby the area, the echoing voice of people in the past, and ancient events of Felarya. The plant may also project nothing if there isnothing happen during its lifetime. The longer the plant lives, the more memories it stores, and the more random its image projects. There are Ever-remerbrances that have lived over thousands years andcan be said to be living witness of the history in the place theygrow.

The plant itself is harmless and fragile, but the image and sound it projects may cause confusion to adventurers and predators alike. Adventurers may find themselves trying to fend away illusive predators, and cause even more random image and sound appear. Predators chase after to catch some running preys, just to discover that the preys were not real. Still, the plants have historical values, and is often sought by historians to study past events in Felarya.

+++

Gargoyle fox

Gargoyle fox is the name of a small fox-like creature with grey fur and black stripes. It has quick feet that allows it to run away from predators, and makes burrows to shelter from dangers and raise its children.

Aside from its elusiveness, gargoyle fox has another self-defense mechanism. In case of being caught or get hurt, it can self-petrified, hardening its body to protect itself from harm. The hardness of a petrified gargoyle fox is nearly-impenetrable against most physical and magical attacks. Its taste also become dull like a rock to make predator to give up on them. Not mention that the fox becomes a lot heavier to lift to prevent being carried away while stoned. If left alone for a while, the fox's body will automatically cancel the petrification and it can move again. In case of its petrified state being broken severely by extreme means, the fox will die.

Gargoyle foxes are pest to farmers as they often attacks small farm animals and hard to eliminate. They can be trained into pets, and are said to be very durable friends to children.

I love the recent idea, The bottom two i especially like for an idea for maybe a story i'm having for Felarya, The Ever rememberence and the Gargoyle fox would fit super well in the urban setting i'm imagining, The Ever rememberance is just pretty cool for concept to begin with. I really like it.

Hmm, interesting.

Preyish is nice. I guess a self-advertised tree could work, though one would wonder how long does the tree last once it gets found? If they eat all the fruits, should it keep making a blip on the radar?

You could make the seed be what predator sense actually detects, that way, the seeds become a little more useful, and the tree becomes a bit more troublesome to preds. The seeds can be used as decoys that way, even after predators have eaten all of the fruits.

Ever-Remembrance seems like an odd thing to have ever evolved; that can't be a defense mechanism, so I'm gonna go on a limb and say someone made it. Would you happen to know who made them, or at least when? Was it a mortal, or a god? What would be the oldest plant found so far? Was any of them found in Ur-Sagol, maybe?

If it grows in the wild, does it have the ability to record events from important places, or just the wild? If so, historians would only be interested in plants that have grown in particular places, places of importance. I wonder, if there are important places with such plants in them, does that mean someone planted them there? Would it be historians trying to preserve their knowledge for the future? Are fresh events recorded better, can you use it to fight crime? Razz

And is it possible to do that? Wouldn't it be hard to plant that plant anywhere? What happens if you pot the plant and carry it with you, can you use it as a magical camcorder? What's the range of the plant, anyway? Does it replay green holocasts, or does it also have sound, are there varieties that are sound only? Wait... could we alter the plant into holocasting something it didn't "see"?

The Gargoyle fox reminds me of the escalnai slug a bit.

Maybe you could consider the fox staying petrified if killed while petrified? That way you can also have fox statues lol, and besides, it's more effective at keeping its predators disappointed.

For Preyish, I think the seed is what generates prey-like aura is a good idea. That way, the thrown-away seeds would still trouble the predator's sense and can be take advantage to serve as false signals for predator-evading purpose, unless the seed germinates. If predator don't want such a hassle, they will gather the seed and put them somewhere far away from their hunting ground, which helps spread the trees too.

About Ever-remembrance, I don't know if it should be man-made or just one of Felarya's bizzare floras. I prefer the latter, because it would be cooler for them to grow at random place and record random thing.

Its memory is about what happenned in a few meters around where the plant grows. It prefers dark places, so they may be found in ancient ruins like Ur-sagol. You can grow some too, if you provide suitable environment for the plant to grow and don't expose it to the sun too much. I think I should add that exposing it to the sunlight will stop its recording, and expose it to bright environment too long may kill it.

I believe ancient people may use the plants to record their history. It is hard to make the plant shows what you want to see, though. The older the plant, the harder to control. But there is still a way to get the plant record specific event: Grow one, put them into a dark room for reserve, and get them out to record the desired event, and put them back to the dark room. It may mix with some images, like the person who brought the plant in and out, but it is better than just let it records every single thing.

While you can carry it around in a pot, having a 3-6 feet plant on your hands and running around is not really fun XD

The plant only projects what it "sees" and "heards" around it, so it is near-impossible to create fake images and sound. But if you are skilled enough, you can pretend for something to happen and let the plant records it, similar to a camera.

In compared with a camera or camcoder, the plant is not really reliable because there is virturally no Pause button, and it always project random images and sound.

For gargoyle fox, I think breaking the pertrified fox would cause pernamently petrification effect on the fox's corpse. So, unless you drugs it or kill it before it can petrify itself, what you get is always a statue in whole or in pieces XD

Ration Leaf

Ration leaves comes from a red plant that often grows in bush across Felarya's jungle. A leaf was about 3-6 inches and has the perfect triangle shape.

Ration leaves have a unique property: they can absorb the flavor and the nutrients when being put into liquid. For example, if you put a ration leaf into a pot of honey, it will absorb the nutrient and the flavor of that honey pot, turning in a "honey-flavored" leaf with equal nurtitional value to a honey pot. The honey pot itself, however, loses all the flavor and the nutritional value and become a tasteless and nutrition-less liquid.

Felaryan chefs often use these ration leaves to a lightweight rations and sell them to adventurers. There are many flavors, from cooked food like curry, soup, stew to sweets like honey, chocolate, and so on. Adventurers often like these flavored leaves because they are diverse in flavors and can carried in bulk.

However, just eating the leaves are not very stomach-filling, even though they often give you the energy and nutritional amount that a normal meal can provide. Moreover, if you try to eat more than one leave per meal, you will get fattened very quickly, making you very appealing to predators and hard to run away from them. For this reason, it is recommended to eat only one ration leaf per meal. If you want a more-filled stomach, just eat something else along with them. There are stores that sell these ration leaves with extra filler, such as dough-only manjus.

Ghosteye Lantern

Ghosteye Latern is a plant that is 6-10 feet in height and is often found in dark places. Their blue tulip-like flowers hang down on the end of the branch and glow like a lantern during nighttime with soothing blue light.

Ghosteye Lantern earns its name because it can force invisbile, intentionally or unintentionally, ghost creatures to reveal. However, it only reveals the ghost, not let the ghost become interactive with the surroundings. If you cannot hear the ghost's voice or touch the ghost through natural talents or other means, you will not be able to do so even already see the ghost with the help of the plant.

Ghosteye Lantern's flowers will continue to glow even being cut away from the branch for a few weeks, before lose its light and wither. The flower is good as a makeshift flameless lantern, and is invaluable when you want to prevent being ambushed by ghost creatures.

However, it is advised to not try to meddle with the ghost too much. Some ghosts have very grosteque form, which can cause nightmare.
