Voice level equalizing is something that's been on my mind for a while and I don't recall seeing in the wiki the answer to the question of how voices are heard between creatures of different size.

Initially I decided it was best to ignore the question and not try to explain it, but for curiosity's sake I'm asking now. Does a giant's ability to hear a human-sized creature's voice normally and vise versa have anything to do with the language translation enchantment on Felarya? If not, I think it should. It seems like a simple enough solution to me.

And I'm sorry if this question has been answered already. ^^;

Well, I've said it before, but I don't think giants should have any problem hearing non-giants. If we make it so that a giant needs giant-sized noise to hear anything, they'll be unable to hear anything under 38 decibeliums- and that pushes a lot of noises out of their lives. That's without going into the fact that larger creatures tend to have pretty sharp ears in real life- just take a look at elephants and whales.

I'd say I have no quarry with giants having giant-sized voices to make some giant-sized noise, because that's not really such a big deal. Even if you raise their volume by 38 decibeliums, all you need to do in order to fix that is have the smaller one step back a bit and yell- or have the larger one whisper softly to an individual they keep too close for comfort.

Just my two cents.

Right. I gotcha. I suppose it's not such a difficult issue to work around. Thanks for the feedback.

I wonder how whispering would work then... ^^ would giants be able to whisper? And, if giants may hear humans speak... how are humans supposed to whisper? :3

Human hearing is logarithmic, and covers a rather large range. I wouldn't be surprised if Milly doesn't need to have better than normal hearing in order to hear her tomthumbs.

Human hearing is rather varied, and I'd assume it's the same for most Felaryan creatures (Giant or otherwise). Some people can understand the majority of a conversation through several walls at casual voice levels, others need you to speak loudly within just a few feet. At the same time, I imagine there's Giant Predators who can hear a bunch of people talking a few hundred feet away (even if they have some trouble catching just what they're talking about), and those that have to lift a demi-human up to their ear to to realize they've been saying something.

Giant Predator type also matters, somewhat. Something that is based off an animal known for its sharp hearing would be better off than one based off a near-deaf animal (who may very well need the demi-human to shout into their ears to be heard).

Well, then you can just make an excuse and say that the near-deaf animal-based demi human is using it's human hearing. (of course they're not really human even though they look it, but to avoid confusion...)

Let's also not forget that these are predators we're talking about. Predators tend to have the senses they use to hunt sharper than usual to find their prey. Most predators we see in our stories hunt humans, so it's not that strange they have good enough hearing to be able to hear where the tiny humans are skittering of to. Like in hard choices, where Caylin found those humans hiding in the overgrown temple because of the noise they were making while talking.

I just have a hard time wrapping my mind around the idea of giants being able to hear clearly words that are being spoken by a person the size of their index finger without holding them closely. But like I said, the question was only asked out of curiosity.

I do as well, but that seems to be the desired level of hearing (if not better) for Giant Predators. This sort-of kills the reason for Predator-sense on a few (if you can hear a human rustling in the brush from about a hundred yards away, you don't need to have an aura-sensing ability), but it also means authors have to do much less work in regard to "Can [x] hear [y]", "What is a result of two Giant Predators talking from a few hundred yards away", etcetera (similar to how many Sci-Fi writers go for technobabble phaser / disintegrating lasers instead of pulsing megawatt lasers or the like).
