PostSubject: Resources I Amassed & Wrote Concerning Felarya   Fri Jun 08, 2012 11:58 am

So as I said in my Farewell, I'm going to post the resources I have collected and written concerning Felarya. Keep in mind that some of it is incomplete.
These docs were written over the course of the past year, beginning sometime in 2011.
My own writing:
Farewell
No Need to Wait
Idea Affirmation
Dusckauner

Online Communication
Defense of the Realm
The Importance of Consistency across a Shared Fictional Setting

Written by other people:
The Collected opinions of 10 other people, including Tangofox, Mr Nobody13, Gorger/Slimetoad and others.

Can we get a mod to delete all the above conversation except AJ's initial post. Seriously, that's some good stuff, and I hope the new guys learn from it. I don't want bickering to sour AJ's simple attempt to help.

That's what he was. A helper, A COLOSSAL HELPER. Seriously, for those new guys who are reading this, he helped so much with this realm no one can possibly even fathom how much effort he put into it. The fact that AJ is leaving should be a major signal. If AJ is to go and leave us, I would want him to leave with the respect he deserves, not as someone who tried to start drama.

We should all be ashamed of ourselves. Every last soul in this community, me included. I realize that alone is drama inducing, but its supposed to be a statement, not a basis to argue with. That is all.

Well, I sorta left already, but I'm actually discontinuing my current stories pertaining to the setting. Everyone I love has left, and just... I'm done. I am dissatisfied with shit, and blah blah. If AJ, the Both, the legendary one, gives up, then that's that. Game Over.

Not gonna write a paragraph. Just gonna continue the tradition.

It's not everyone.

It's only like 6 people, who have collectively written about 3 stories between them in the past year.

They just like the drama, like going out with a bang. It'll pass. They've just got a lot of bitterness to get out of their systems.

Still, kind of strange that this is like the third time something like this has happened to me. I joined a clan in a game, they disbanded soon after I joined. Joined a guild on Runescape, disbanded. Join a forum for D&D, disbanded. And now I join Felarya...and six people leave. :/ It's like a curse or something.

PostSubject: Re: Resources I Amassed & Wrote Concerning Felarya   Fri Jun 08, 2012 9:02 pm

This thread grew really fast so I haven't had time to read everything, but here's my response:

It is indeed disheartening that AJ left, especially when the letter he left behind painted such a bleak picture of our future. It's sad that he thinks it will never improve - of course I can't say he's wrong but neither is it fair for him to assure all of us he's right. If anything such a fatalistic message is only going to help the community die by killing any remaining hope.

I feel sorry that he felt so alone. I admit I have done little to help the community and the universe improve, but I do share his desire to do so and I'm willing to contribute more if it's needed, and I don't think I'm the only one here who fits that description.

And to Darth Nergal and all the other new people who joined the forum after I did: Many people may indeed be leaving, but for my part I assure you I will not give up on this thing just yet, or any time soon. It may not be good, but I've seen communities start going down the tubes like this before and it's my nature to fight it to the end. It'll have to get a lot worse to drive me off. Now there may come a time when I have little to say or little free time to contribute here, as has happened with me in a few other communities, but that doesn't mean I've given up. When I do have time I intend to come back (remember this is in the hypothetical case that I take an extended absence in the future), and not leave for good until there's nothing left to salvage or I am expressly driven away by Karbo or the other prominent community members (read: banned). So there's still people here and there's going to be as long as you and I are around.

Ahh man, I always thought you were pretty cool and intelligent guy, and I really liked your stuff. I'm sorry you feel that way, but at least you've got closure now. Smile Goodbye man (emphasis on the 'good') and if you ever fancy returning or anything I'd be happy to chat to you again!

Several aspects of this thread, and the various posts it contains, are under moderator consideration. We'll let you know shortly what action we're taking.

In the meantime, everyone, be civil. Or the thread will be locked.

Has anybody ever heard the phrase, "Ignorance is bliss"?

I have a great tendency to make that phrase the driving force of my life, be it intentional or unintentional, and it's no different with Felarya. I have absolutely no reasonable idea or stance on anything that has been going on here, and yet, I feel like I'm one of the people enjoying myself most in the setting. Is that wrong? I don't know. But it seems to have served me better than getting all worked up about everything like everyone else seems to be doing. But maybe that's who they/you are, just as not taking account of things that are happening is who I am. Nobody's wrong for doing what comes naturally to them. Felarya teaches that on a daily basis.

I don't know how to solve any of these problems. But I do know what's not going to solve it; getting worked up and yelling at each other. I know that I always try to understand both sides of an argument before deciding which one I think is right, and often enough both sides have valid points. They're just stubborn and don't want to compromise, and that's when the fighting that doesn't benefit anyone starts.

There are those of you who see this as a stunt AJ is pulling to stir up trouble. Personally, I've met the guy and I think he's far too laidback for something like that. Then again, I could be wrong, and he sees pulling a stunt like this as a way to help bring light to some problems he sees with Felarya in the hopes that people will do something about them. Which means everyone still here has two choices: Agree with the points AJ made and attempt to take action, or disagree and ignore what he says. We all should know getting into big shitstorm fights about them is not going to help anyone. You're all getting in bad moods just by participating, I bet, getting angry because this person said that or whatever. If you agree, then agree, if you disagree, then disagree. Let the two sides believe what they believe and allow each other to be at peace. That's the ideal I'd like to follow here.

So, yeah, I guess that's all I have to say on the matter. Think what you want about it.

I've heard it and, you know, after the last drama I tend to go for that. Because I'm kind of fed up with every little ember that fires the next shitstorm.

I read AJ's farewell yesterday and although it got me some time to think of it, I finally told myself that, indeed, it's a big loss for the community, but overthinking about that won't help solve the problems.

Every single one of us should do what they think is the best for the community, from simply writing, drawing or commenting to reinforcing communication. Whatever they think it's the best for the community as a whole.

Ok, I have split the diatribe from this thread as the rest of it was so far off topic and served no purpose.

You know, I just recently got wind of this thread after being away for a while, and I feel so bad that I missed this massive drama storm.

AJ, if you read this, I'm sorry I wasn't there to help you when you needed a friend. So much has been happening in life, and I would've done everything possible if I could've. I am imperfect, after all, and I make many mistakes.

And to everyone else, I'm sorry if I haven't helped much here either. I'm not leaving Felarya, but I just haven't had the time to put all my effort into it. I have a disheartened attitude regarding all of it and if I could make it up to you guys, I would.

I just hope I can be of more help to you guys in the future.

While I don't share Nyaha's view of "Ignorance is bliss", I do agree that getting worked up about what happens is not the way to go. When I'm in a community, I tend to get involved in it; the communty's problems are my problems, since it not only affects me, it affects all the people within. Friends of yours quitting the setting is one of the multiple examples of how a problem affects the whole community. The thing is, you have to reach the mental state where you care about the community but you don't let the situation get you.

I know mostly nothing about the problem, but I'll eventually end up involved in it, and then I'll address it the same way I address every problem: patience. Like Nyaha, I believe in all sides having valid points. The only thing needed is a cool-headed person in each side that is willing to state the points and not shout at the other party when they state theirs. Points could be proven valid or invalid through discussion, and even if they can't be proven, an agreement can be reached. But both parts must know they have to give up something to get other things in return. This is most easily done with the help of a mediator of some kind, who helps getting the two sides closer.

AJ, I'm going to miss you. I might not have seen too much of you, might not have known you too well, but what time I talked with you or listened to you were fun. I would have liked to get to know you better, but...Oh well. We'll miss you, whether we say so or not. You're a hell of a guy, and it won't be easy to fill the gap left by your passing. I can only hope we'll manage, and fix what we can. Peace out, man.

Did you ever give some thought as to why they've accomplished so little during their stay in this community? There's a lot of issues that don't make it out into the public, you know. I can't even find the words to express my discontent with this elitist bullshit.

That quote is nearly 20 days old, lol. Way to cherry-pick there.

Maybe you should try and get updated on a situation before posting in a thread that's been inactive for quite a while.

Also, I am very aware of the private issues. I was there for most of them =P

Heaven's opinion is not 20 days old, Cliff. Anyway, there seems to be little more to add.
