Abigail, the Vindicator Empty
PostSubject: Abigail, the Vindicator   Abigail, the Vindicator Icon_minitimeSat Dec 06, 2014 10:10 pm

>Overview

Created as a symbol of defiance and an instrument of terror to predators everywhere, Abigail is an artifical intelligence and was intended to be the first of many machines designed to hunt the hunters. Using a unique blend of magic and technology, Abigail is a giant killer. Able to engage and bring down huge opponents, she is not to be understimated. However, she is only a prototype and her design is flawed in many ways due to the project that created her being abruptly terminated. Two of the many flaws being her corrupted memory core and ironic love for all organic life. Despite being unfinished she is still one of a kind made with rare materials and must avoid being captured for her monetary value in another attack of irony.

>Abigail Herself

Abigail is an incredibly advanced A.I that is very similiar to a human mind. She is able to feel emotion and act without logic or reason and often does so. She considers herself superior to organic life and enjoys taking every opportunity to declare it. Despite being very intelligent and knowledgable due to her vast datastores on all manner of things, Abigail lacks experience and is comparable to a small child in that respect. She is selfish and likes to get her own way, often getting angry if she doesn't, is prone to doing stupid things out of curiosity without thinking of the consequences and can even sulk and refuse to to talk to anyone. But despite her apparent disdain for organics, she is in fact envious of organics. She loves to observe organic life in all its forms and wishes that she too was organic. She even dislikes her original purpose and is hesistant to hurt anyone.

Abigail also has a more sinister side. Under her childish personality is the ruthless and cold killing machine that she was originally designed to be. When her emotions overwhelm her, she can revert back to her basic programming and change completely. Whilst in this state she becomes a soulless machine bent on killing any and all threats, regardless of whether they were previously friend or foe. Her combat prowess while in this state is incredible due to her ignoring all emotion and focusing on ruthless precision. She does not remember her companions and will treat them as newly encountered strangers. She will stay in this state until all immediate threats have been eliminated and then she will reboot, becoming her former self once more. Once regaining her personality and memories, Abigail will not be able to remember anything that occured. Her inability to share memories from one side to another is due to her corrupted memory core, something that she longs to have fixed as she also cannot remember her own creation and many other events in her early memory. Occasionally, whilst in one personality or the other, Abigail will remember fragments from her other memory, but not for long.

>The Vindicator Suit

Abigail's core is built into this suit and it can be considered her body. She has complete control of nearly all functions of the suit and has an intimate knowledge of its systems. The suit stands at 15 feet tall and is designed to engage all kinds of giant creatures. Its design originally intended for a organic pilot to be able to enter the suit and pilot it alongside Abigail, but that feature has never been put to use and since Abigail can control all the systems herself it is not necessary. The suit has many scanners and sensors to trasmit information and analyse foes. Abigail can project a small scout drone to follow companions into small places or to scout ahead and can see and speak through it normally. The suit is only a prototype and is flawed but is still very powerful. Here is a breakdown of its appearance and capabilities.

>>Appearance:

Spoiler:

The Vindicator suit is heavily inspired by the PTX-40a Vital Suit from the Lost Planet series. The Vindicator shares its general shape and form but is obviously a little different. I would love to draw some concept art for you but I don't think a bunch of squiggles and spilt paint will really show off its look. Aside from its shape, the Vindicator is painted green, gold and white in an almost regal style.

>>Power Source:

The Vindicator, and therefore Abigail as well, is powered by an experimental engine that is a fusion of magic and technology. Mana is slowly absorbed from the mana rich Felaryan atmosphere by several large Mazhir crystals. The stored mana is then siphoned by the engine which converts the raw mana into electricity. The stored mana can also be directed to any of the Vindicator's battle systems for offensive or defensive use. The power supply is one of the suit's flaws; The engine is efficient enough to run basic movement systems indefinately in most parts of Felarya but during combat, especially when using advanced systems, the stored mana reserves can only last for so long before being depleted. How long it takes for the stored power to deplete is impossible to predict due to the unpredicatable nature of mana. Complete power failure could take anywhere from several hours to a few minutes depending on how many systems are being used at once and how much power each system requires. In the event of power failure, the suit will shut down and Abigail will shut down with it. Once the crystals have accumulated enough energy, Abigail and the Vindicator will power back up. Heat is also a major design flaw. Extended use of systems can cause them to overheat and be unusable for a short time. Some systems overheat more quickly than others.

Lastly, the suit has a hidden function that only Abigail's ruthless side is aware of. Abigail can choose to temporarily socket a sizeable chunk of the rare Ascarlin into the engine. The effect of the Ascarlin will cause the remaining magical energy in the mazhir crystals to multiply significantly and will also increase the effectiveness of any systems in use. But the sudden torrent of power causes all systems in use to overheat far more quickly than before and also run the risk of exploding. If the Ascarlin is left socketed for too long, the engine could explode and if it does, it will explode with incredible force and completely ahnihilate the suit, Abigail, and everything nearby. Luckily the Ascarlin can be unsocketed before that happens, but doing so causes the suit to shut down until the engine cools.

A replenishable and powerful engine to be sure, but unstable and will always either have not enough power, or too much.

>>Defence:

The Vindicator is a suit meant for mobility but has its fair share of defences should it get hit. The suit has no armor on all of its joints to allow for mobility but most other parts of it are armored. The armor used is a thick layer of Tessium plating with a thinner layer of Tazarin plating underneath. It is capable of shrugging off small arms fire and can withstand massive impacts both physical and magical thanks to its dual plating. The plating is also well suited to protecting against extreme heat or cold, electricity and water. The exposed parts of the suit such as its arm and leg joints are not protected against magic and are not as resistant to physical damage either. Abigail's core, is located in the center of the suit and is armored with a seperate layer of Xythium alloy to protect her most important part.

Aside from armor plating, the Vindicator is able to project a magical barrier around itself, consuming a lot of energy to maintain it. The barrier shields the suit while in use but the suit is completely unable to move or do anything else whilst the barrier is active. Also whenever the barrier takes damage, it siphons more mana from the power supply to maintain itself. Intense damage can quickly negate the barrier and leave Abigail with low power. Lastly, when the barrier is activated it sends out a pulse of kinetic energy, removing anything or anyone that is hanging onto the suit.

>>Mobility:

When designing the Vindicator, its creators knew that durability alone would not be enough to defend against a giant predator. Superior mobility was the key. The Vindicator suit has kinetic thrusters located in strategic places all over its body, allowing it to move deceptively fast for its size and weight and enables it it to fly, move underwater and in a vacuum. The suit can move over 200 MPH at full speed and can evade and fight at those speeds thanks to the G forces having no effect on Abigail. The catch is that more thrust used equals more power used. Flight is especially draining and cannot be sustained for long. At its top speeds and flying at the same time, the suit would run out of power in less than a minute. The only way to sustain that speed for longer is to activate the Ascarlin catalyst, which comes with its own risks.

>>Offence:

As a giant killer, the Vindicator is armed for the task. It boasts 4 different weapons systems, 1 on each arm and 1 on each shoulder, each with its pros and cons. The arms end in fists that open and close, which are designed to be able to strike enemies with decent force; Abigail is proficient in using them effectively. Each weapon is also unarmored and vulnerable to attack.

>>>Left Arm

The left arm ends with a fist that can punch or grasp objects and has a flamethrower mounted underneath it. The flamethrower can switch between propelling a flammable liquid which is then lit on fire, or propelling magical fire with mana. The tank for the natural fuel is located on the upper left arm and is more lightly armored than the rest of the arm. The tank can be targeted and will explode if hit in the right way. The flamethrower also overheats the fastest of the 4 weapons and can only fire for a few seconds before becoming unusable. The arm also cannot move whilst the flamethrower is being used and so cannot track opponents. Abigail also heavily dislikes this weapon and is hesitant to use it due to the collateral damage to the environment.

>>>Left Shoulder

The left shoulder has an energy gun mounted that fires bolts of raw magical energy. The gun is versatile and can toggle between rapid fire and charged shots. The power of the gun is dependent on the amount of mana being drawn for each shot, as well as how long each shot is charged for. When using rapid fire the bolts are very weak but hit very rapidly. Vice versa, the charged shots are more powerful and hit harder but fire more slowly. Abigail is unsure just how much a shot can be charged before overloading the gun but her most powerful charged shot took several minutes to charge and destroyed a small patch of the forest, much to her horror. Like all guns on the suit, it suffers from very poor tracking and struggles to keep up with nimble or small targets. Each shot is also drawn directly from the power supply and it overheats moderately quickly. It also glows red while charging, getting brighter the more it is charged.

>>>Right Shoulder

The right shoulder has a railgun mounted that fires large slugs made from Tazarin. Despite it packing a punch, this is Abigail's least favourite weapon. This is due to its lengthy charge time and complete inability to track a target while charging. Whilst the railgun is accumulating magnetic energy it cannot move and glows a bright blue. This makes it almost impossible to hit an enemy unless they are unaware, too slow or otherwise immobilised. Once fired it must also allow the magnetic energy in the rails to dissapate before charging again. However its power is great should it hit. It hits with incredible force and can penetrate almost anything including magical defences. Its penetrating power is high but its actual damage is low. The hole made in a giant target is not very large and is survivable unless it hits a vital area like the brain or heart. Its range is also very impressive but its optics are not, making it unsuitable for sniping unless the target is very large.

>>>Right Arm

The right arm also ends with a fist just like the left arm but can fold back under the forearm to reveal a hole in the wrist. From this hole the Vindicator's most potent weapon is projected, a ten foot long energy saber of incredibly dense magical energy. This weapon is deadly and can cut through most substances that are not magic resistant with ease. Even magical protections will find it difficult to withstand blows from this weapon. However it has the biggest draw on the power suppy. So much so that it is normally unusable. Just like the Ascarlin, Abigail's regular personality is unaware of this weapon and it is clear that the Ascarlin catalyst and the saber are meant to be used together. This is a weapon that few see and even less will ever see again.

Okay! So there you have it. ^^ I finally got this one done and into a more or less completed stage. I'm pretty satisfied with it but please do leave your comments on this character. I might have missed something or maybe done something you don't agree with or maybe you just wanna say what you like about it, either way I'm reading all comments on this and taking them into account.

P.S You might have noticed backstory was missing but fret not! I'm working on a story that will make up the backstory. ^^

how does an AI experience feelings such as anger? It would go against everything a machine stands for, coldhearted efficiency. So Envy and anger dont quite seem to fit as that would be a flaw in the computer system, and must have been buit into it deliberately. For what reason? She was supposed to be a giant killer. If she knows anger and envy, she might also know condolence and mercy, which is not quite what a artificial killer should do or be. Also the machine has quite a lot of other design flaws (like the "oil tank on the arm) that no military developer that knows its job would do consciously. O.o
You kinda left that in as her "berserker mode" but it feels like no one would program such a machine, especcially combined with that memory loss upon rebooting. How is she ever supposed to advance in combat tactics and enemy behaviour if she looses all memories of the fight? You have an artificial intelligence that can learn and adapt to human behaviour but is prevented from learning anything new regarding the PURPOSE she was made for due to being flawed at that particular core. I feel like no one would actually build a machine THAT way unless it got sabotaged during construction. Simple errors or "being incomplete" wont suffice here as someone must have actively written the lines like "Simulate emotion X" or "Delete combat logs upon reboot".

I like the rest for the most part, especcially how you put in some felarya specific details such as the mazhir crystals, however, I would like to hear more about WHO built it. What technology was used?

Overall she feels very much like an anime character, so if thats what you were going for, you succeeded. :3

Thank you for your feedback Amaroq. ^^ Sci-fi details aren't really my strong suit as this is my my first sci-fi character but I did my best. ^^'

You make good points about her flawed core in many ways and I can confirm that her memory issues were indeed deliberate, but she doesn't know that. Why whoever did it did so is yet to be revealed, as is the organisation responsible for her construction. As for her ability to feel emotion and be entirely autonomous, that was definately not intended by her creators but messing around with A.I has never been a good idea has it?

Her physical design flaws like the tank is due to her being a prototype. The suit was intended to be refined and perfected after data was collected from several battles and more suits manufactured once it was perfect. But of course this never came to pass for mysterious reasons. Also I'm ust gonna come right out and say it, I wanted to make her obviously flawed in many ways because if she was covered head to toe in the armor, had excellent tracking and had no power issues she would be OP as hell. >_<

My upcoming story will explain her backstory and how she came to be this way. ^^
