I've noticed, as well as others in the past (and earlier today a member mentioned displeasure at having a repeat of the Grenade discussion) that many topics related to Felarya tend to be repeated.

Looking over the forum, it's easy to see why. The forum, for it's convenience in meeting together and having chat/the ability to post permanent threads, does have flaws when it comes to finding information.

There is no sorting function, and as such, threads inevitably 'disappear'. The average user isn't likely to go exploring 9 pages into the forum to find a thread answering their question.

As such, people will continue to repeat questions, post similar (if not exact replicas) ideas and suggestions, and generally bring up year(s) old mentions/points in discussions that *are* fresh.

My suggestion is for a moderator to make a thread in the general discussion, if not Karbo himself. This thread will be stickied as to avoid being buried.

In the thread, it'll have multiple topics broken up to generalize, like a table of contents. (IE: Negav, Civilization, Magic, Predator-Prey connections, etc.)

Under each of these, threads - either those recovered from years past by brave explorers of the depths, or new ones - will be linked, with a short descriptor next to each link to give a general idea of what the thread contains.

This way, it'll make it easier and less grating for older members and new alike. New members can find answers to their questions/confusion, ideas, lore, in-depth descriptions, etc.

Old members won't have to repeat them and grow agitated with the noticeable/constant backtracking.

Now obviously, many threads aren't canon. However, they contain discussions that can provide context and depth, so that if any mention of similar topics arise, people can have the foresight to participate without recycling.

I think it's time to break out of the cycle of repeat debates/cycles.

Well isn't basically every point Karbo makes pretty much canon?

Anyway, this is a pretty good idea. I know I am probably one of the unknowing offenders... But in any case, this would simplify things. But if someone has a new take on a old idea or question, I hope that the reply would be counted. Because I have had some of these as well.

Thank God somebody noticed, I was looking for a specific thread that just disappeared. Somebody, implement this! Wink

While that would certainly be useful (and I've personally thought about it more than once before), a thread compiling that amount of information would be overwhelmingly huge, and require a great initial effort in order to go through each and every thread of those nine pages in order to glean out the information. Not saying it's impossible or that shouldn't be done, just that it's implausible.

In the mean time, I suggest using the  Search function up there right of the Index and FAQ buttons. The advanced search has some good features that help narrow down your findings. The only pity is it seems to just look in the topic's title.

Actually, you guys should implement a sticky that compiles the titles of the important threads and link to them.

(Kerbal Space Program forums actually scour more than 20 pages, more or less, just to compile all related topics. It is hard at the beginning but will get easier along the way, and their thread links are quite neat.)

Well, the thing with a game's official forum is that they have people hired to do that sort of thing, on top of them having a lot more freedom to add and modify things to the mainframe as they tend to own the servers the forums run on, as well. The case here is a bit different, but as I said, a compilation thread is a possibility many were considering. I don't think an "index of important threads" is needed, though. Ten-ish pages aren't that much when you're just looking at the titles in order to see if it may be related to your interests. Important threads are generally those with the most comments.

The problem is, those threads would have to be updated constantly to keep up with recent developments and new topics that are discussed. Also note many topics are also discussed, if not solved, on the chat with no forum topic backing it up.

Not saying to do or not do it, just something to keep in mind.

Didn't Stabs propose the solution of using Google and typing in "site:felarya.forumotion.com" before what you were searching for in order to turn up broader results? Don't get me wrong, I like the idea, but Ilceren's right - that would take a huge effort, and if there's a more efficient method, we should explore that, first.

Yeah, Nyaha. I did that, but that wasn't all I did, either.

If you want me to do that for every single thread, that's... a bit too much work, considering you guys don't even use the first one.

Frankly, that first one should have been stickied long ago. Someone dropped the ball on that one. ._.

I'd like to point out that I never explicitly stated that only old threads would be added. New threads, even if their topics pertain to past discussions, can be added.

Fear not, those that seek gripes, we don't have to sift through the entire history of Felarya. Though when we do find threads and can add them in, that would be nice.

Reading comprehension, gentlemen.

I happened to come by this thread again and noticed that the QA archive Stabs made wasn't stickied at all after the talk. Fixed.
