This thread is about the mineralogy of Felarya. Basically, talk about its particular gems, rocks, metals and all sort of minerals that makes this place unique. Anything that already exist on Earth has nothing to do here. The name doesn't need to be original, but the material itself must be unique. Exemple:

Myoxianum: A blue-ish, silvery metal commonly found around the Scorched Mountains. It is stronger than Titanium, but as light as leather. It's particular for being affected by magic. Weapons made of Myoxianum can be empowered by magical artifacts to give it various effects such as draining mana or stop machinery for exemple, or to make them more effective against something particular, such has being more effective against ghosts. Armors made of Myoxianum increase resistance against magic, but it's not perfect. Assuming you wear a Myoxianum armor and fight against a fairy, you could take more attacking spells, but shrinking magic is still very effective. Among all magical metal found in Felarya, Mythril is probably the most common of them, and offers all-round basic protection while other metals are more efficient in some areas than Myoxianum.

Mythril doesn't make Felarya unique. Feth, makes it the oppossite.

Extremely light yet powerful metals are common in fiction (Ilithmar in WHFB, Adamantium in Marvel / DC comics, Mythril itself in LotR, D&D, etc). These are alright to have. However, you may want to come up with your own name.

Google "Latin English" translator, and perhaps find the latin words for "Metal" and "Light", then mix the two to get the name.

EDIT: just to be clear, only the name is the problem. The idea & metal itself isn't one.

I like the idea of a metal that is easily affected by magic, but I think that the advantages should be compensated by disadvantages.

For example:

Steel:

Pros-> Cheap, sturdy, easy to work with.
Cons->Rusts, heavy



The idea being that I think that everything should have drawbacks as great as advantages. Titanium for example, while being stronger pound for pound than steel, is VERY expensive, and hard to work(machine/smith). This means that while titanium might be a bit stronger than steel, for a lot of things you wouldn't want to use it because it'd be so pricey, that it'd be unaffordable(Plus I'm a Mechanical Engineer by training, and have used titanium before and it really isn't much better than steel for a lot of things, however it's crazy expensive).

In my experience as a real life engineer, is that everything has a pro and a con. It's either high performing, cheap, or available, but only 2 of the three. I try to reflect that experience in what I put here, because I think it keeps interesting Smile .

This metal is actually very common. It can be found under the Felaryan seas, in forests, and even in volcanoes. The base element is in itself rather weak, and must be tempered by a powerful smithy before it can be of any real value.

When it's properly tempered, it becomes a very powerful armor. Unfortunately, it cannot withstand physical attacks very well (a machine gun, for example, can pierce it in only a hundred shots).

However, it is completely resistant to all magic.

The name of the metal is derived from Earthly spanish. Cero means Zero, and Magia means magic. It literally forms "Zero Magic" Armor. The wearer is affected by the magnetic field generated by the properly tempered metal, and is protected from shrinking, mutation, what have you.

It's only for use in magic heavy warfare. Attacks using physical might can pierce the armor rather easily. If you encounter a fairy with a club, for example, you're dead.

Also, it won't save you from being eaten, as certain predators claim that the armor tastes like chicken, tempered or not. It gives you more of a chance against fairy and succubi, with their magical stomachs, but other than that, you are screwed.

I'd call that "Quite Powerful". Hell, I'd call that "Absurdly powerful" unless said Machine Gun is something like an Airsoft gun.

NOTE: I take the above as meaning "A hundred shots to the same spot", not "All across the armor", as the later does not make sense to me.

With normal armor you'd be such anyways. 100ft Being smacking you with hundred-plus pound club = Look, your organs liquified!

Decent material, though. As stated in other threads, my criticism is a nasty habbit of mine. Similarly, I see no reason why it would need to be changed. Perhaps just a rewording at some spots, but nothing more.

I like the idea of a fragile armor that negates magic. It has a bad enough drawback that means that if it's used in a story, that the character definitely needs to be aware of this weakness. It has niche purpose, but isn't something all that goldy. It also isn't cheap to acquire, so it means that for a character to get this, he/she needs to put some effort into getting the material.

I keep envisioning something like a camoflauge type material that allows for a person to be extremely hard to detect, but provides literally no protection of any kind. Something like an infiltrator material.


Unobtanium

Unobtanium is got its name from the extreme difficulty in acquiring the material. The material that is available, is extraordinarily expensive, and is specificially designed for use camoflauged armor sets. These armors allow for the wearer to move undetected through virtually any environment, as well as masking any scents that the occupant might be putting off. The draw back to this material, is that it requires constant maintanence, as well as providing very little protection. However it's usefulness to explorers makes it amongst the most expensive armors, as it allows the careful traveller to walk through predator infested lands with relative safety.

Thank you for pointing that out. I didn't clarify that well.

Unlike other armors, which can take a licking and still keep sticking (no vore pun intended) this armor doesn't last long versus weaponry. A heavy duty shotgun shell could tear straight through it, for example.

If the armor takes a hundred or so shots of MG fire (despite where it hits) the armor begins to structurally weaken. It's like a string of mineral fibers, and if too many are severed, then the armor breaks.

In other words, FEAR THE FAIRY WITH A MACHINE GUN.

Altoidium

Basic: A metal that when refined and smithed properly is nearly impenetrable from being pierced. Blunt damage can do massive damage to it.

Special Properties: Highly acid resistant. Wearing armor wont save you from being digested as only the metal is acid resistant. Stomach acid will simply go around it. It takes predators several days to digest during which time they will have a massive case of indigestion and be barely able to eat if at all. Though it is hard to digest it has a very sweet minty flavor to predators. Some have been known to keep this metal when they find food wearing it to suck on when they eat bad tasting food.


The armors ability to resist being pierced can even prevent bites from the fangs of dridders, it may even damage their fangs. Not that it will keep you alive. It will just add the amount of time it takes them to remove it from you to your already doomed lifespan.

Colarite:

A very common rock with no specific color. The particularity of that rock is that it can turn inanimate objects the same color as the rock itself. Its minerals can change the light frequency of any unliving objects by mere contact. It seems to temporarely bond with the person holding it, as a simple thought will apply the color, and this with incredible accuracy as long as you are holding it. There are virtually a type for every color and are found litteraly everywhere. They are highly sought by paints and designers alike, though not very valuable by themselves, they would be ready to pay a fortune to possess some. Aside from this, it's just an ordinary rock with an unusual color.

Also called "Duelist's Steel" for it's almost identical properties to non-hardened steel, the unusual properties of this metal are most apparent in a dueling situation. An item made Duelist's Steel cannot harm in any way another item made of the same material. Even a hardened and sharpened chisel of the metal cannot chip, dent or scratch even a raw unworked piece of Duelist's Steel ore. Likewise, that piece of ore could never dull the blade on the chisel. As such, the metal must be mined, processed and worked using conventional metal tools.

Very often, this metal is used to make Duelist's blades, shields, and armor, so that they never need sharpening or repairs after a duel, hence the metal's nickname. The metal has become popular in such circles because it guarantees that the dual was won or lost by the skill of the fighters rather than the material of the blade.

More subtle effects happen when an item made of Duelist's Steel is enchanted. First, the metal itself is amazingly common for a magical material and is often mistaken for common Steel by those who aren't familiar with it. Even before its properties were known, this lead to it becoming popular in (relatively) cheap magical items. When Duelist's Steel items come close to one another, the enchantments (or curses!) on them temporarily become split between them. So if a person is using a regular Duelist's Steel sword to fight someone with a similar sword that has been heavily enchanted, then they each get all of the enchantments at half power for as long as they are near each other.

Merconium
Also known as "Mercon" and "Sticky Rocks"

Basic facts: Merconium is a slightly rare rock with an unusual property. Merconium sticks to just about anything, exceptions being more merconium and some types of plastics. The main solvent for Merconium is saliva. Tastes surprisingly sweet.

Uses: Many predators use merconium as a combination trap and condiment, if they are lucky enough to have some near their home. By scattering some merconium across a path, filling a hidden pit with it, or more usually, by dropping a load of mercon gravel over a passing prey, they prey is weighed down or immobilised enough to make an easier, and tastier, meal.
Humans tend to use the rock for more practical purpose, making various tools and items that utilize the adhesive property. One particular use is by melting the ore down to make a particularly powerful adhesive. Prices for Merconium usually go fairly high, enough for many adventurers to risk heading to the nearest deposit.

Unusual fact: Nekos seem to be much less bothered by merconium than humans, and tend to be stuck less easily. Many say it's because of how they groom themselves.

Magium:

An extremely rare type of metal. It is somewhat transparent. it can be made into very powerful weapons or armor, but the process is extremely difficult. It's practically invulnerable, but acts like a magnifying glass to magic. Anyone wearing a suit of magium armor is nearly immune to physical attacks, but any magic will go right through it and be nearly doubled in strength. For this reason it is highly sought after by those with the ability to cast magic to focus their magic through.

Slicite:
A unique and fairly rare metal. When properly made into a bladed weapon, It can cut through almost anything. However, it is extremely brittle, and is generally made into knives or daggers. A full sword would break easily. Even as a knife or dagger, it is still very frail, and needs constant upkeep.

Dargonisium

Never found as it's pure form in nature, Dargonisium is usually found as Dargonisium Oxide in arid regions. When processed and refined via a rather simple method, Dargonisium is a rather volatile substance. Exposure to water causes the mineral to explode. Submersing a sizable chunk of pure Dargonisium into water would generate a rather large explosion.

It's most common use is as a crude explosive for use against the various aquatic creatures that live in Felarya. A typical Dargonisium charge consists of a round ceramic orb with a hole that holds a large chunk of Dargonisium. The hole is plugged with a material that dissolves in water at a controllable rate. When the orb is tossed into the water, the material plugging the hole slowly (or quickly) dissolves until water can enter the orb and detonate the mineral within.

Alcazath Crystal

These rare crystals are found within the lower lairs of the Tomb of Alcazath in the Mysterious Temple, and are named after the Tedrek titan king himself. The gem has an odd ability to absorb magic to certain thresholds and then release the energy when it has crossed a limit of energy it can take. One of the more notable uses was serving as a focus in Tedrek Steel weapons and shields, often a coat over the flat parts of the sword so it could be used to effectively parry and reflect magic with training to release it. A sword imbued in this manner was a very high quality weapon- containing the propeties of Tedrek Steel to slice through most stone and almost any metal with ease with magic offensive capabilities. The shields often had a large gem imbedded in the middle to absord higher amounts and could form elemental barriers of what they were struck with. A weakness to the crystal is that it can become unstable after being hit with alternating elements of opposite types- fire and ice for example- and could shatter if not given a proper support frame for it to control the changing energy (namely heavy duty Tedrek Steel). The gems origins are a mystery and could be believed to maybe be a gift from the guardians themselves to the titan king before being locked away in his tomb.

Vificus

Vificus is an uncommon metal that is rarely found in notable quantities. Similar to bronze in many ways, few people unaware of Vificus' properties will bother to harvest the material. However, the ore is valuable due to one unique trait. As with Altoidium there are anti-acidic properties to Vificus.

The way Vificus is unique as that when rapidly oxidized - for instance, when doused in hydrochloric acid - it quickly turns liquidus and highly basic. If the material were to wind up inside a predator's stomach, the acid would be relatively harmless for a short amount of time (the amount varying on the acidity of the stomach fluids, the quantity of fluids, quantity of Vificus, and how 'pure' the ore is). Because of this trait, people may survive long enough in a Predator's stomach to attempt a plea-bargain or some other mean of escape.

Caligonite

Caligonite is an common mineral that is found in water submerged rocks,
in it's solid form it's pretty useless however, if it's crushed into a fine powder the Caligonite
can be used as a smoke bomb.

Sealing it into a case with a weak acid the powder starts to turn into a fog, this would take about 2-3 mins to be
fully primed. This could be helpful if you need to flee from a hungry predator.




Scintilla

Scintilla is a very rare gem that can only be found at the Pyrale mountains, it forms differely with the amount of heat subjected to it.
Depending on the temperture they can come out in different colours (like a diamond...sort of). Apart from being beautiful jewelry Scintilla's have a natural fire magic within them, when struck with a hard object a spark shoots out.

The strength of the heat varies on the colour of the gem:
Red = Very Low
Orange = Low
Yellow = Mild
Greenish Blue = High
Blue = Very High
White = Extreme

Adlevite

A rather unremarkable appearing metal with very remarkable properties. At first glance, it’s a soft metal that is very malleable, and can be worked into any shape or form fairly easily. However, it is not durable, and will deform or break when even relatively light stress put on it. It is more common for it to be drawn into thread and woven into fabric and clothing. It is a lustrious tan in color when polished.

The remarkable thing about this metal is that it has the strange property of lessening gravity around it. The amount that gravity is lessened and the size of the area affected is proportional to the amount of Adlevite. A volume of a cubic inch is enough to cause a man to weigh only two thirds his original weight when held in one’s palm. A cubic foot of it is enough to render a tank completely weightless. An example of the uses that this mineral has can be seen in the tale of a man who once owned a cloak interwoven with Adlevite thread. When confronted with a predator, he would simply jump and sail up out of the predator’s reach. (Unfortunately, he met an untimely end when a passing fairy thought it would be funny to steal the cloak midjump to drop him into a dridder’s web. It is unknown what became of the cloak.)

The myriad of applications for this material has made it extremely valuable. However, it is also vanishingly rare. Very few deposits of it are known, and the knowledge of potential deposits are highly sought after by adventurers and profiteers. It is also being researched intensively by those who wish to find the secrets of synthesizing it. So far, they belive that there is a connection between Adlevite and the Floating field, given their similar effects. Some think that the Floating field is capable of transforming a more mudane substance into Adlevite, and have experimented by leaving samples of various minerals and metals in the Floating field’s path. So far, their search has been fruitless.

Eidoron rocks have the simple appearance of stones, carved with little electric blue shining veins of metal that dig inside to the very core of the stone
they're quite particular for one simple reason: they float in mid-air, 1mt. from ground, usually. The most the stone is filled with this particular blue metal, the most high it floats, but obviously, depends on how much normal rock material it's attached to it, its composition and weight.
Though, the Eidoron rocks are magnetically charged by the magic reaction and don't float away, balancing the ground rejecting power of the metal veins with a magnetic force that attracts them down and keeps them in place opposing a fierce resistance.
The Eidoron rocks can be found around veins of Elerrin metal.

The blue metal Elerrin it's a natural magic metal, embed with the powers of wind, it's quite resilient but lacks resistence, its fusion point is around 1600 degrees celsius, and usually is used in little amount during the crafting of swords or shields to make them more light and agile.
This particular metal can be found in various spots on Felarya, but it's quite rare to find, for just places that have suffered heavy erosion phenomena so the ground can unleash the Eidoron rocks in the air.

Just a basic idea. I must work further with the creation of this material but for now I lack creativity.
I mean, there can't be a fantasy-oriented world without floating rocks, am I right?

Maybe it's too similar to the Adlevite idea but I think this could be a good variant. Adlevite lessens the gravity around it, but reaching the critical point of gravity needed for the floating of the rocks (using an example, the rocks, to float, need to reach a point of gravity [0] or [-1] in the first case, the rock flies away with the minimum touch stopped just by the aerodynamic inertia effect. In the second case they would obviously reverse gravity and start a vertical fall... up to the sky.)
