"Then come." Captain Illidar said. "I hope you can shed some light on this situation for us." Ultimately, Ilim was still far too confused. This man came from an unknown organization. This planet had no end to its atmosphere and giant snake people. Ilim almost thought he was dreaming. That would be the only thing that made sense now, but there was no waking from this nightmare. Leading Mordal through the ship, they eventually arrived at a small room. A table and two adjacent chairs were set out. A computer monitor sat in between them, looping the recovered data. "Please, have a seat."

Ilim wasted no time himself and took his own. "So you are not a native to this planet yourself then?" He asked his question as he looped recorded voice from the Spartan.

Mordal sat down "As you know, this is Felarya. It is inhabited by giant voracious Predators. Nagas arent the only ones. There are Giantesses, Dryads, Mermaids, Centauresses, Fairies, you name it. Basically, they'll eat ANYTHING." He leaned back in his chair, getting comfortable to tell the story. "Ten years ago, I went through a portal in my Pelican - a type of ship - and arrived in Felarya. Dimensional rifts pop up at random every where. Different worlds, universes, andalternate universes. I was originally from Earth. Any way, There are natives in Felarya, including Nekos, Humans, and other races. Felarya is controlled by whoknows what. That's all I know. Oh, there's one more thing. Befriend a predator, for it will be very helpfull."

This news was vital. Unexpected but a real step in the right direction. "Different worlds and universes? Then that would explain why you have never heard of Admiral Gerarch." In truth, this was excellent news. They may not know it, but Scouting Party A had succeeded in their mission by bringing this person here. It would make sense. If these portals could come from anywhere, then their appearance here would have been routine, which explained the lack of interest. A mixture of societies would explain the lower technological level, and if this planet were controlled by the insurgents, it would have not made that much sense to send the Star Skimmer here unless it were captured. It seemed even odder though, that humans would exist elsewhere and share the same language. Perhaps alternate realities themselves were to blame.

But there was still one thing that had Ilim concerned. "Our weapons are top of the line, yet we were unable at any point able to confirm damage to this... naga. A few hits were scored, but they provided no lasting damage." Again the relevant data played across the monitor. "Would you happen to know why?"

"I'm geussing it's the magic in Felarya. I can't figure out any other reason why. From what I've seen nothing can harm a predator. Not even blowing it up from the inside." Ordal stood up. "Excuse me for a moment." He got to an area of the room where he had some space, and he took his EQD Spartan armor off. He placed it in his back pack once he was done. Mordal then sat back down.

"Magic, fairies, Dryads. Are you mad? Such things can not--" Ilim was losing his cool. Such notions were absurd. The only reason he held his tongue was because playing on the monitor in front of him was proof one one beast of legend. "I apologize." He said, standing up. "This day has been... taxing." The captain was not completely ready to accept such a thing. He thought it would be best to go on a different tangent. "Considering your time on this planet, I trust you know of at least one friendly settlement. Do you know where we can find one? We need to learn as much about this place as we can."

Ilim was not sure if he could handle any more oddities today.

"Yes, there is. It's a city where predators can't go. Unfortunately, we have to go by foot. I don't have any coordinants." Mordal hated to do this to the poor captain, but it was the only way to safety. "Hopefully, if we run into a predator, we can bargain with it. Crisis, especially. I know a few ways to change her mind about eating some one."

"And the name of this city?" Ilim was now more interested. If there was a way for people to live here, then there was hope for them to survive long enough to get back home and end their war. "Also, could you point out its rough location?" As Ilim spoke, a map popped up on the screen. It was grossly incomplete. The outline of the forest they were over, as well as for the mountains to the east. All there was filled in was a narrow strip running by a river two kilometers in length by scale.

Ilim turned to leave the room, motioning for Mordal to follow. Hitting a button on the wall, Ilim spoke. "Prepare a dropship to leave for the location I am sending you. Drop off our guest and gather further intel regarding this planet." There was a confirmation over the system and Ilim opened the door to the hall. A crew member was waiting to escort the spartan. "I thank you for your cooperation with us Mordal. If you follow this gentleman, he will lead you back to the hangar." He paused for a moment, sighing, before once again extending his hand, this time for a farewell. In his palm was a small device. "I trust we may meet again soon. You have provided a great service to us."

/End <Scouting Party>
/Reviewing data...

/Preparing summary...

The Strendent Armada ship, Star Skimmer, and its crew were caught in a trap which opened a portal to a strange land. Captain of the Star Skimmer, [Ilim Illidar] sent out a scouting party of four to asses their situation and to determine if a nearby settlement was under Insurrectionist control. While scouting the city, [Scouting Party A] came into contact with a panicked [Mordal], a strange soldier from a planet called [Earth]. Following him was a creature of immense size, which was later found out to be called a [naga]. As the five soldiers ran for their lives, they called for evacuation in the resulting panic. Not knowing the true danger of this planet's creatures, members of [Scouting Party A] attempted to buy time for [Mordal] to distance the distress beacon from the unknown predator. By the time their evac arrived, the scouting party was reduced to [A-Leader] and a severely injured [A-3]. Attempting to allow the dropship to escape, [A-leader] stayed behind and kept the creature at bay with a show of force, demonstrating that these predators did indeed have a higher degree of intelligence. Shortly thereafter, both [A-leader]'s and [A-3]'s vitals failed. [Mordal] was then brought before Captain [Ilim Illidar] and was able to provide brief intel regarding the nature of this [Felarya]. Further information was gathered in the town that [Mordal] had provided the location of. Insurgent existence in [Felarya] is a negative.

End result: Mission Success

Note: Rest in peace STA

/End Summary

The Star Skimmer was quiet after the funeral. Common practice dictated a burial at space, but there was no option for that here. It was truly a dishonor for the members of Scouting Team A. The weapon systems aboard the vessel had been shut down as a display of peace to the citizens of this world prior to the day's start. Ilim was walking down the hall to his private bunk when a familiar, mechanical voice filled the air in that portion of the hallway. "I have finished the summary as you requested captain. Is there anything else I can assist you with?" Ilim looked up at the speaker embedded in the ceiling which was now directly above his head. "Have you finished mapping the city N Seven Two?" There was a brief pause before the voice returned. "It is now finished. Anything else?" Ilim continued to walk as he responded. "That will be All N Seven Two." Before he continued, Ilim remembered something. "Actually, see if Eric is ready to test the Mapper-7. I would like to see if it will bring a much needed success to our crew."

//Start <The Engineers>

Time elapsed since previous entry: 3 days

A low hum reached the forest floor, growing steadily as the leaves above rustled in the unnatural breeze. This only lasted a brief moment before the gale. A wind of surprising force ripped through the canopy, sending birds and other small animals scurrying or flying away with haste. A loud roar split the lush air as what appeared to be a flaming rock ripped through the trunk of one of the enormous trees. Wooden splinters flew in every direction, burnt, but not burning. A second later, an explosion kicked up dirt and turned fallen leaves to dust, sending the debris high into the air. Above the new clearing, an ominous dark shape flew high above the forest.

Within the smoldering crater, the flicker of a short range communication came to life, Ilim's voice coming in clearly. “You botched the landing. Clear the area and activate your stealth measures. We don’t want to lose you to a naga.” With that, a giant, metal foot smashed into the top edge of the crater. Following it was a low set body by comparison to the rest of it. On four legs sat a rectangle shaped body. It’s hull glowed slightly from the accelerated fall as it began to move surprisingly fast through the undergrowth. Stopping as it reached the base of a nearby tree, it could be seen in its enormity for an instant before it vanished all together. Enormous, the fifty foot quadruped had made quite the entrance, one that it was now trying to avoid detection from.

Another voice sounded over the communication channel, male. Young, but with the bite of smug intelligence. “I worked on the controls for this thing for two days straight and never got to test it, what did you expect would happen? The cloaking device is activated now, but we will have to check for damage… unfortunately.” The speaker was Eric Dawns, designer of the Mapper-7, cartography mech. Often he would let his achievement get to his head. But why shouldn’t it? This forest was home to the most vicious, and largest, predators any of them had ever seen. The perfect stealth unit was essential. And perfect it was. The Mapper-7 offered cloaking form the full visible spectrum, weight distribution, and even a rapid escape option. His fellow engineer, Sarya Endril, would have loved to put some weapons on the thing, but Eric was not ready to cause more damage than he already had.

Just as the engineer had hoped, the diagnostics on his precious creation all came back green, although the coolant system was working overtime. But from a landing like that, such a thing was to be expected. The only problem right now would be a curious predator.

"Impressive space shot." The voice came from none other than that fellow engineer, sitting in another of the five seats, grinning wickedly. The two were good friends and often took shots at one another, even on missions. "Yah yah. Lets just keep silent for a bit."

Mordal was in his EQD armor, trying to search for Crisis. With any luck, he would be close. He knew this would be stupid. "Crisis! I need to talk to you!"

No curious predators had shown up in the length of time that the Mapper-7 remained stealthed, so it would seem there were none close enough to take interest in the spectacular landing. "We're clear." Eric said as he pushed the controls forward. "Let's see how this thing operates." As the quadruped mech moved, it's stealth faded in a shimmer. The sound of robotic joints could be heard throughout the forest as the Mapper-7 slowly made its way across the terrain.

This time it was Sarya who spoke. "So the money here is in cartography? It's a bit boring you know." Her right hand was cradling her chin, a look of disinterest on her face. "It would have been better if we fitted this thing with at least a rapid pulse cannon." Considering the previous events, the other 3 members of the Mapper-7's crew agreed. Eric however, was not letting that disturb him. "If we did put one of those on, we would have to sacrifice the effectiveness of our mapping range. Besides, I have a plan for any predator that would dare to try and attack us!" Smug as always, Eric turned around to face the crew, a wide grin playing across his face. Sarya did not change her expression however. "Whatever. Don't even know why I had to come along."

Another member of the crew, known as Jackson, took his shot at the conversation. His voice had a thick, southern accent to it. "Cause yer tha only engineer who knows how ta use anything more than a sidearm in tha crew." Her expression did not change, but she felt better. At least her being here had some significant purpose. She wished that her primary purpose here was weaponry rather than vehicle maintenance.

PostSubject: Re: Strendents Chapter 3: Negav   Strendents Chapter 3: Negav - Page 2 Icon_minitimeTue May 06, 2008 10:38 pm

Just above the canopy of the trees, a silvery craft flew at incredible speeds. It was a small craft, shaped like a water drop, with the point to the front. It was only about four meters in length and two in width. A bubble canopy was on top, barely rising above the surface of the craft. It’s surface was smooth, but there were seams on it at periodic intervals. On the back of the craft, there were a couple of open ports for the thrusters. This craft, despite the fact that it could seat three, had only two occupants. A human and a robot.

“A meteor has struck relatively near,” The robot, SCARAB 17, commented in an emotionless tone. It was a small sphere with a multitude of sensors, projectors, and recorders on top. On the bottom were numerous metal appendages ending in a variety of graspers and tools. On either side on the equator were two spherical thrusters that could be aimed independently (unpowered currently). It had a small data link that was hooked into a port within the cockpit.

“Hmm, that’s uncommon. Bound to attract attention.” The human occupant mentioned. That was David Thorne, formerly of Centauri Terraforming Station before he was stranded here. On the short side (the gravity of Centauri IV does that to you), he was fair skinned, almost pale, and had short brown hair. He was of average build, neither bulky nor lean, and his right arm seemed to move in a slightly unnatural way.

“It is possible that there will be raw materials available. We need additional iron,” SCARAB said.

“I’ll do a flyby, if there’s a chunk we can fit into the third seat you can grab it,” David said, “But if any class 1 life forms approach, I’m gonna split.” He worked a few controls in the cockpit and the silvery vehicle slewed to the side as it turned toward the recent impact.

Arriving there, he saw the crater, but it was empty. He couldn’t see anything in the immediate area that caused it. “Key up the scanners, if anything to big gets within five kilometers, warn me.” David said, “I want to try and find out what caused this.”

“A possible relevant datum,” SCARAB offered, before switching to external audio. THe sound of mapper-7’s mechanical joints echoed in the cockpit for a few seconds.

“Sound human made alright. Where is it coming from?” David asked.

“64.21 degrees right from North,” SCARAB answered. Nodding, David turned the small silver vehicle again and sped after the mapper-7.

Even though the Mapper-7 was slow moving for its size, their work was completed faster than normal methods would allow. It's systems could create a highly detailed 3-D map of the Mapper-7's surroundings, but could not work around trees. It was unfortunate, but set the crew's path. Starting from their landing site, they would spiral outwards, mapping an entire circular region of a large diameter. Fortunately, this method was only needed in the forests where dense foliage made it impossible to map the land from the sky. All things considered, this mission should be smooth sailing, but it would draw out for a while. "After we're done,we should see this town the captain found." Eric said this without thinking too much, but still expected some kind of reaction. That is where Jackson picked up again. "If yah can get past tha yer still on duty." Eric smiled. This part, he had already thought out. "We are stuck in most likely an alternate dimension with no known way back. Until we find that, our presence here will just involve a lot of waiting around and trying to keep ourselves occupied. The captain will let us go at some point."

“We should be near it,” David said, bringing up an underside view on one of his flat screen displays. Whatever it was, it was well hidden by the forest canopy. Checking the scanner readout, he saw that no large predator species were nearby. He could afford a little curiosity. He slowed down the speeder’s pace and dropped down through the foliage of the trees.

“There it is, haven’t seen that one before,” David commented, coming into visual range of the mapper-7 massive quadruped form. “Is that a vehicle or an automaton?”

“There are human occupants,” SCARAB stated.

“Hmm, Try and contact them. Send a signal from the TComS,” David said. (TComS, short for Tachyon Communication System, relied on the faster-than-light particles for instantaneous communication.) “If they don’t respond, switch to the backup radio and repeat.”

Mordal was becoming exhausted from searching for Crisis. He had searched for only a few minuites. "You'd think a hungry Naga would go looking for a meal." He said to himself in a slightly exhasperated tone. Before he knew it, a looming shadow washed over him. "Found her."

"We're getting something on long-range communication!" The crew of the mapper-7 immediately turned to Eric. This possibility could change a few things. Initially he thought it could be the insurgency, but soon he noticed the signals were just too different. It used roughly the same form of data transmission, but it had enough differences that full communication would be different. Filled with static most likely. "Are you going to respond?" Sarya was no learning over Eric's shoulder, intent on knowing what was going on.

It would be a good idea to find out who or what this was, but vocal communication would be out of the question, but they could do something else. Punching the intercom on his side, Eric spoke to the Star Skimmer. "N-72, transfer your data down to us. See if you can replicate that signal and bounce it back." He thought for a moment before continuing. "What's that one thing they used to communicate with. With the longs and the shorts?" Jackson replied in a matter of fact tone. "Morse." Eric thanked him before repeating it to the AI. In only a short while, N-72's voice came over the Mapper-7's internal speakers rather than the comm. "I have finished doing as you have requested. A standard greeting of course." This made Eric nervous. Standard greeting for them up until recently had always followed war time protocol. Eric sighed and spoke to N-72. "New message N Seven Two."

The original message in fact would read, "This is the Mapper-7, state your allegiance and disarm weapons or we will be forced to react." It wasn't long before a second message was sent in the same pattern. "Disregard the previous message. Are you human?"

“Return TComS signal detected. Encryption: Universal Morse. Translating.” SCARAB said in it’s usual monotone. After a moment, the two messaged followed in the same emotionless voice.

“Odd, why Morse?” David wondered. Despite it’s significant age, Morse was still useful because of it’s universal compatibility with most communication systems and its resistance to static and distortion. But there were better encryptions to use with the TComS. “Does the signal match the standard parameters for TComS?” David asked.

“Negative. The signal varies beyond standard limits for wavelength and energy. It was not made by a TComS.” SCARAB answered. That in itself said much. They were able to quickly adapt a different system to create a reply. However, wherever the large quadruped vehicle came from, it wasn’t from the Galactic Republic. David had hoped (though didn’t really expect) that it might be part of a search and rescue task force looking for him.

“Should I transmit a response?” SCARAB asked.

“Yes, in Universal Morse,” David said, “Transmit the following: Yes, I am human. David Thorne formerly of Centauri Terraforming Station. I am unarmed. I was stranded here by a dimensional anomaly two point four standard years ago.”

David paused a moment. “I saw your entrance. I strongly recommend against further actions of that nature. Attracting attention here is dangerous. End Message.”

"Message encrypted and transmitted," SCARAB said.

Mordal turned aound calmly and looked up at Crisis. She had an innocent smile, but there was a hungry look in her eyes. "Hi there." Mordal said to Crisis. "I'm Mordal. I need to talk to you."

Upon receiving the following pair of messages, the crew aboard the Mapper-7 breathed an odd sigh of relief. Sarya snickered as she said, "At least we can confirm they're not even from our galaxy, let alone the insurgency." That part was true, and indeed a relief. Eric however, was apparently deep in thought. He was trying to remember something he learned. Right on the tip of his tongue. "Radio!" Before anyone could ask, the engineer jumped into an explanation. "All of our current communications techniques won't function well here. And besides, even we still have 'em for emergency purposes. I know we could keep using N Seven Two for Morse, but there isn't really ever a substitution for an actual voice."

With that, Eric punched a few buttons on the controls in front of him, causing a slight static to fill the speaker system. Now speaking to N-72, Eric continued. "Ask them if they could switch over to radio communication and send them the frequency. However, first let them know that this is the Mapper-7, cartography mech of the Strendent Armada." As for this David persons second comment, Eric would ignore it. Sarya however, was not of the same mind. "See Eric, even strangers think you need to work on your landings."

Crisis picked up Mordal, and brought him up to eye level. "Oh? I'm sorry, but...I'm hungry." She was about to drop Mordal into her saliva-covered mouth, but Mordal shouted: "WAIT! Don't you want to hear a story?" Crisis stopped, and looked at Mordal with a grin. "Oh? May I please hear it?" She placed Mordal in the palm of her hand, eager to hear Mordal's tale.

------

I am Mordal: Spartan 791 of the United Nations Space Corps: The UNSC. I am a Spartan: A Marine Super Soldier. The UNSC is at war with the covvenant, which is made up of different races of aliens. The Prophets are their leaders. There are the Brutes, Hunters, Jackals, and the Grunts. The Elites have an alliance with the UNSC, and we are trying our best to stop the Covvenant from activating all of the Halo Rings, which are enormous planet-sized rings scattered across the universe. If they are all activated, every sentinent being in the universe will be destroyed. Despite our differences, the UNSC and the Covvenant have one common enemy: The Flood. The Flood are parasites that take control of and mutate a body.

Anyway, I was fighting on one of the Halo Rings against the Flood. Not an easy battle. Master Chief, also known as Spartan 117, was successfull in making the Halo ring self destruct. as the Ring was blowin up, I managed to get away in my Pelican. A Pelican nis a type of drop ship. Right before the explosion reached my ship, a portal just opened up in front of me. And here I am.

------

Crisis gazed in awe at Mordal. "Wow! I never heard any story like THAT one before!" She exclaimed gleefully. "Are you still gonna eat me?" Mordal asked nervously. Crisis thought for a momemt. "Nah, I liked your story too much. Wanna be friends?" She gave him a cheerful smile. Mordal smiled under his golden visor, even though he knew that Crisis couldn't see his face.
