Specter Fae

Overview

Specter Faes are fairies you would most likely find in Sunfall Thicket. They are fairies who moved to this dark land a long, long time ago. Over the centuries, they adapted to this land rich in ghosts and have gained some of their abilities which can make these predator particularly deadly.


Appearance

Because of the ambient darkness in Sunfall, the skin tone of Specterl Faes have adapted to dark hues which gave them very good camouflage. This can range from gray, to dark purple, to black, etc. They usually have fluorescent marks on their skin as well as glowing eyes and hair, although they fully control the light generated by their bodies. They can sometime make them glow so brightly it creates an aura around them.


Abilities

As stated before, Specter Faes have gained multiple abilities from the land rich in ghostly magic. First and foremost, just like Phantom Elves, they can see ghosts perfectly and are capable of communicating with them. Secondly, they eventually gained the ability to turn to an incorporeal form just like ghosts. In this state, Specter Faes are immune to almost any type of physical attacks. However, magic and energy will still hurt them. Because of the ambient darkness and the rich spiritual magic, Specter Faes will usually specialize in either Dark or Shadow magic, or Shamanism. Their abilities with phasing and shadow magic can make them pretty deadly. They also possess this ability commonly known as Shadow Jump. Shadow Jump let them sink in a shadow and reappear out of another shadow, much like teleportation. However, just like teleportation, it's limited to how powerful the Specter Fae is and she cannot come safely out somewhere she hasn't seen before. While they still possess the ability to alter their own size, they no longer possess the ability to alter the size of other creatures. However, they also gained the ability to assume a semi-incorporeal state which makes their mouth and digestive system big enough to eat preys almost as big as they are.

Specter Fae's are very weak to light and can't survive in broad daylight. While they can stand dim light just fine, direct exposure to bright or daylight will automatically send them back to their solid form. A Specter Fae's skin will slowly burn when in contact with the sun until her form vanishes in thin air. This is why most Specter Fae will cast a Darkness spell around them to trudge safely in the outside world. Light magic and light-infused weapons can revert them back to their solid state and hurt them very badly.


Hunting Habits

Specter Faes hunt a variety of animals and plants in Sunfall Thicket. However, the prey they tend to hunt the most are ghosts. Their spells can actually affect these incorporeal creatures and their digestive system have adapted to consume them. They are erronously refered as soul eaters because of this. However, they must first be in an incorporeal state in order to gulp the specter down. Strangely enough, when they return to a solid state with a ghost in their stomach, it turns solid with them. They are not entirely safe against ghosts as Labrisomes will sometimes make a meal out of the Faes. Specter Faes will also generally try to pick on lone Phantom Elves, their greatest enemies. Successfully capturing and eating a Phantom Elf is considered the pinnacle of pleasure for Specter Faes. They consider outsider humans, nekos and elves to be rare and valuable delicacies. Because they no longer can shrink other preys, when very hungry, they will assume their semi-corporeal state and swallow a prey close to their size whole. Unlike nagas, this takes a long time for them to fully digest these preys. Thankfully for giant predators outside the Thicket, their Darkness spell doesn't have a big enough range to safely protect them from the sun when fifty foot and taller.


Behavior

Specter Faes are very whimsical, even for fairies. They enjoy scaring and surprising any travellers, including fairies from the neighbor village of Kortiki. These fairies tend to view the Specter Faes as a little disturbing and creepy. Sometimes they even go so far as pulling a prank by phasing an ordinary fairy into their stomach and keep them inside just to scare them. They will hunt other fairies if they are particularly hungry, sometimes going as far as cannibalism. Specter Faes have great beliefs in reincarnation. In fact, the elder shamans have a tradition of calling back the soul of certain departed Specter Faes to inhabit a ghost and reshape it into their former body. This ritual happen about only once a year. Specter Faes have a deep hatred for Phantom Elves because their abilities against ghosts are effective against them as well. They rarely miss the chance to ambush a lone Phantom Elf and devour it. Unsurprisingly, many wars occured between the two races, although they have been declining over the decades. Nowadays, it's almost entirely unheard of.



This is a response to Melancholy-Melody13. I screwed up in two chapters by using a Dusk Nymph while she owned them and she declined the permission to use them. So I made these to compensate and she gave me permission to. Thank you very much, Terra.
