Good Start?

I'd like to know if this a good start to a character:
Name: Alfenus Llottatore
Personality: A very intelligent learner with a photographic memory to help. He’s kind-hearted, but with a slight temper that is to be reckoned with. He’s naturally crafty and can almost make something out of nothing. While he is kind-hearted, he’s no fool and knows when he’s outmatched, outnumbered…and outsized. He may feel guilty, but his logic to leave a man behind for self-preservation helps save his life.
Appearance:
Eyes: A dark shadowed green with speckles of gold.
Hair: A dishwater-y blond color with a two violet strands hanging near his eyes.
Skin: A tanned, but olive color which keeps him from burning in the sun.
Clothing: Having prepared for a fight, he had on wraps on both his hands and feet, brass knuckles adorned under the ones in his hands, and black tennis shoes on his, over the ones on his feet. His black t-shirt with black jean shorts on also. His black jacket was on also, the skull with a snake and rose entwined within it on back was stained with small bits of blood
Background: Alfenus was once a fighter that had quickly perfected every style of fighting simply by watching other people fight. He was on his way to a championship fight when a car crashed into his own. When Alfenus awoke, he only knew his name and things he needed to do to survive. But he also awoke somewhere he found strange (i.e. Felarya). Soon he realizes he has to learn some new things and fast. Or else.

I like his personality, but he seems a little fighting-emphasized: "quickly perfected every style of fighting simply by watching other people fight" seems a little too good. If he'd travelled his world to be taught by masters of every, or at least many different kinds, of fighting style, that, I think, would work much better. Overall, a very good start! ^.^

I'm really hoping that this a better profile than the first. I spent all day trying to get a solid background as well as a more sense-based personality. I decided to find a way to make the fighting part of him a part of his life while emphasizing his photographic memory that helps him. I thought of a military background while also finding a way to incorportate the martial arts into his life. I also wanted to find him a way to learn without simply watching every technique. So HOPEFULLY this is better.

Personality: While a kind-hearted person, his logic makes him seem cold-hearted and selfish. He sees the whole better than one life. Having an early military background at the age of 25, he also knows how to strategize well to keep a large group safe and that makes him intelligent. He is observant, which allowed him to move up ranks quickly because he could spot snipers and units from seemingly any distance. He was also extremely crafty, making weapons from rubble when no ammunitions were visible. His martial arts styles make him a fierce fighter with quick but devastating blows. Overall, his a kind person with cold logic and a strong will.

Eventually, everyone realized he was no genius just someone with a photographic memory. When Alfenus was seven his father whom was a master of the martial arts introduced them to him. Though he could learn moves by watching. He had to practice to erase any serious flaws in his style. When Alfenus was seventeen, he disappeared in the wilderness. Two months later, the search teams found him resting comfortably in a cave. He had made a home, weapons included. He simply laughed at their shocked expressions. Later, he grew to become a master of many different martial arts. He was on his way to a championship fight when a car crashed into his own. When Alfenus awoke, he only knew his name and things he needed to do to survive. But he also awoke somewhere he found strange (i.e. Felarya). Soon he realizes he has to learn some new things and fast. Or else.

I'm not sure how you can be kind-hearted and cold-hearted at the same time.

If you're spotting snipers they are doing something wrong, and are not worthy of being called a sniper.

at any sort of range a gun always beats a stone or fist. There is a saying that the man who lives by the sword dies by the man who doesn't.

There is no standard set for geniuses it is a term used to describe an above average ability that can either be in a variety of areas or in one area in-particular.

Learning how to fight isn't just technique you have to develop and learn how to use certain muscles.

This just seems out of place lacking any form of transition from the prior subject. You say he disappeared, but was this him running off, or was it him getting lost? This part here rather vague and could use a great deal of elaboration before it could be seen as working.

Ever hear of the expression "jack of all trades master of none." Many is a very vague term and regardless of how intelligent he is it would take a good deal of time to master any one martial art.

He watches from places that he figures are safe, watching other people as well as inhabitants, learning uses for plants and objects in Felarya. He even modifies them so he can defend himself and attack pursuing creatures.

Personality: He is kind-hearted, but has an extremely logical mind which sometimes makes him have a harsh, cold appearance. He is observative, having “eyes like a hawk.” He is strong-willed, and so giving up is a rare occurrence. He is extra crafty, being able to make weapons out of different things. He is blunt and to the point most of the time.
Abilities/Survival Skills: While having magical capabilities, he has never actually learned how to manipulate magic in a world of science. He can make many weapons, and observe things while remaining hidden. With a military background between the ages of 21 and 27, he is a wonderful strategist and leader. He is an excellent propagandist. He is both strong with his body, and skillful with his mind.

No my friend; this is not a good start. You have a mary sue character. Not a huge one, but it is a 'sue nonetheless.

Everyone seems to have different opinions on how this seems. I'm really not sure what to do now. I feel a little bit dazed...

The average man is more interesting that the perfect man. That's what most have been trying to say. Not many people can relate to the character, in spite of how many cool traits he has. He is rarely the cause of his own troubles. Most of us are not geniuses. Most of us are not as fit as a fiddle. Even fewer have both those qualities. What you have to do is scale back on the awesomeness and give the reader a at least one reason to be concerned for this man, other than the fact that he is lost in a dangerous world.

It's a work in progress Sanion. Don't give up on this character just yet.
