New Area Concept - God's Lost Land Empty
PostSubject: New Area Concept - God's Lost Land   New Area Concept - God's Lost Land Icon_minitimeTue Jul 20, 2010 8:08 am

I've been reading the forums for awhile, but I'm brand new to posting.
Figured I'd start out with an idea I had to fill in part of the (hopefully) unused uncharted area to the east of the Oloonde Lakeland. I thought that a location such as this should be significantly mysterious, with a lot of rumours circulating about it but very little actual travel there. Following that, I came up with the idea of a sort of "treasure trove" of magical energy, a place that is very close to the origins of Felaryan magic. As a side note, I'm sorry if my references to the workings of Felaryan magic are incorrect.

So here it is (very LONG, I love details ^^Wink:

God's Lost Land
Danger: Hazardous
Sub zones: Hallowed Fields, The Rippling Eye, Eisenschrad, The Abyss of Time
Inhabitants: Elementals, ghosts, magically altered flora/fauna

An ancient, mythological "holy ground" engulfed in a large-scale dimensional distortion, situated somewhere in the uncharted area to the east of the Oloonde Lakeland. According to theories on the working of dimensional space, it is in fact still a part of Felarya, but it is completely inaccessible by regular means. Rather than being blockaded or hidden by magic, it simply doesn't exist unless you are already inside it. Anyone entering the area from the outside would see and feel nothing but a vast expanse of empty land, but yet this space, according to all scanning equipment, IS occupied by SOMETHING. The most prominent theory is that the place is temporally and physically there, but it exists in a sort of pocket reality within the dimension, only accessible by currently unknown means. (There was one traveler who returned from the place, recounting information on it but refusing to give the location of an entrance).

Wherever it actually is, God's Lost Land is said to be the most concentrated point of primordial magic ever conceived. It is literally a repository for an unfathomable saturation of latent, untamed magic. The ley lines of energy that exist to some degree in all areas of Felarya are so prominent and powerful here that they are nearly visible to the naked eye, and even a novice mage could grasp them with ease. Because of this, most of the Lost Land is considered extremely dangerous, with magic elementals and various other strange, ill-formed creatures stalking its forests. However, it is also a place most mages would give anything to locate. In this place so close to the origins and roots of all magic on Felarya, a sorcerer could theoretically cast spells capable of bending the very rules of energy and nature, spells normally considered impossible, no matter the talent of the user. The place is, to mages, essentially the equivalent of what the "philosopher's stone" is to alchemists: the ability to use their craft without paying heed to the rules that govern it. There is no solid proof, however, that this could be done, even in such a magically saturated land.

Much of the Lost Land consists of Felaryan jungle, but the flora and fauna have both adapted in strange ways to the huge amount of available magical energy. Plants and animals are constantly absorbing this energy, often glowing or even shining with shifting colours, and radiating intense magical auras. Even the airs itself sees the effects. The entirety of the Lost Land is covered in what, at a glance, appears to be thick, white fog. However, it is actually not water, but magical energy in such concentrations that it has condensed and become visible. If a light were shone through it, it would seem just like water vapour, but any magic cast in the vicinity would cause the "fog" to react, creating either a dazzling display of light and colour, or a more violent, potentially dangerous reaction. Because of this, casting anything in the area is a very uncertain task, as there is always a chance that strange, unexpected side-effects may occur (though not necessarily negative ones).

There are two possible explanations to how God's Lost Land received its name. The first is that it is so difficult to locate, seemingly hidden by the Felaryan Gods themselves. The second is more based in superstition. There are quiet rumours that in the distant past, the guardians stripped the powers of one of their own who had lost sight of their duty and become corrupt, casting them down into the place to be forgotten, and essentially "lost" to history.

Hallowed Fields
Danger: Very High
Inhabitants: Magic Elementals, Ghosts

At a certain spot in the Lost Land, the dense foliage gives way to a large field of magically saturated mud and long yellowish grass, covered in thicker "fog" than most areas. Overhead, huge slabs and mounds of rock, some the size of small mountains, float freely overhead, supported only by the fact that the spot is especially unstable. A few elementals or ghosts exist here, but nothing with a non-ethereal body is insane enough to make its home here. This is because the huge rocks in the sky are in constant motion, tossed around by distortions in the dimensional fabric reacting with the magic-saturated air.

The tremendous spires can, at any point, come crashing down to the plains below with uncertain speed, sometimes even leaving craters. Just as easily, sections of the rocky ground can be torn up and tossed into the sky to join the ones already there. The mud makes travel there even more difficult, not allowing adventurers the mobility that may save them from a falling boulder the size of a house.

The Rippling Eye
Danger: Low
Inhabitants: Fish.
A lake situated not terribly far from the Hallowed Fields. Travelers will know immediately as they approach it, seeing the dense jungle give way to flat, rocky terrain ankle deep in crystal clear water, with lily pads or strange (but harmless) flowers floating on its surface. More notably, the magical saturation of the area is much lower, making visibility better. Indeed, the area around the lake looks from within as if it is surrounded on all sides by a wall of white fog, but above, the sky is visible in relatively good detail (strangely, it is Felarya's current sky, which gives merit to the theory that the Lost Land is indeed a part of Felarya). The lake itself is completely circular, surrounded by a ring of small, smooth rocks. No rivers lead to it, but it is by no means stagnant. In fact, it is almost completely clear, and amazingly pure. This suggests the presence of an underground river system.

The lake itself is very deep, and many fish of varying appearances and sizes swim its depths, but never close enough to the surface to disturb it. Because of this, the surface of the lake is usually as smooth as glass, allowing one to see quite far down. From above, it looks very much like the pupil of an eye, as the very depths are nearly lightless. Every once in a while, ripples will form from the middle of the pool and move out toward its edges, despite the fact that there is no wind. This has been attributed to the vibrations created by especially large pieces of rock crashing to earth in the nearby Hallowed Fields. Interestingly, while the magical saturation of the area is relatively low (comparatively), the ley lines of primordial magic are actually easier to grasp here than anywhere else in the area.

There are seemingly no other inhabitants in the area, save the fish, which are mostly non-predatory magic-feeders. The place is not labeled as completely safe simply because there is no obvious explanation for the lack of hostile species. Nothing dangerous ever goes there, with no apparent reason, and the implications of this hint that something is not right...

Eisenschrad (Pronounced Eye-zen-shrod)
Danger: Very High
Inhabitants: Unknown
Deep within the Lost Land lies a truly ancient, run-down stone fortress the size of a small city. Its construction is plain, but like nothing ever seen in known civilizations, hinting at its immense age. Within lies a maze of corridors, spires, and destroyed courtyards, all draped in a fog formed from the truly extraordinary concentration of magic. This fortress extends deep underground, becoming increasingly dangerous as it is navigated. Spells are dangerous to cast, as the latent magic could react at any time in harmful ways. Ancient magical traps line the halls, made even more dangerous by the reactions their activation could trigger. Strange and terrible creatures, some formed from pure energy, also stalk its depths. Not a single soul should be insane enough to venture to the deepest levels, even for the massive hoards of treasure and magnificent artefacts supposedly contained within. The fort is rumoured to be an ancient, long-abandoned home of the Guardians.

The Abyss of Time
Danger: Legendary
Inhabitants: Unknown (Would you even want to know?)
On the lowest floor of Eisenschrad fortress, the middle of the floor has fallen out, forming a tremendous hole. Below, there is an expanse of sheer blackness extending in all directions for what seems like eternity. The magic of the area is so strongly concentrated that it has actually become not only visible but corporeal, forming winding, undulating pathways of pure, solid energy. These are strong enough to be traversed, but the danger is unimaginable. They are so fickle that they constantly change their locations and connections to each other. In addition, they can simply wink out of existence with no warning, possibly appearing somewhere else entirely, and dropping whoever was following it into the endless expanse below. Casting magic of any sort in this area, no matter how trivial, is almost certain to create an aftershock so violent that it would tear the caster apart in an instant.

Barely visible, far below, is a single, pin-prick sized point of white light. It can be seen that all of the pathways connecting to each other extend from this pinpoint of light, much like a system of nerves. If, by some incredible feat, someone was to follow these paths all the way to it, they would find an orb of pure white, semi-solid magical energy the size of a small house. This is a permeable wall, and what treasures or horrors lie within is a complete mystery. There are whisperings (from those who have heard the stories) that it may even be a secret to the workings of Felarya itself.

Ohh very nice job on that one Smile

It's a very interesting zone. It's well described, detailled and original. There is many ideas that I like here ^^
For example the way it's situated "outside", and the almost visible ley lines.
Great job ! Razz
