Jasconius' Area and Sub-Area Ideas Empty
PostSubject: Jasconius' Area and Sub-Area Ideas   Jasconius' Area and Sub-Area Ideas Icon_minitimeFri May 07, 2010 7:49 am

Here is where I will post my ideas for both areas and sub-areas for the world of Felarya.

I agree to the disclaimer.

Area

The Underworld

The "Underworld" is a series of underground caves and tunnels located beneath Felarya, specifically beneath the Forest of Whispers and Chidokai forest. While one would expect this area to be consumed in eternal darkness, this is not so. Massive forest of giant bioluminescent mushrooms can be found throughout the eastern side of this area, while to the west lies an underground sea that is nearly twice as big as Jadong Lake. The sea is aglow with the lights of specialized sea creatures and bioluminescent corals that feed off of magic instead of the photosynthesis of their algal symbiotes like those of surface corals. Rumor has it that their is even a giant underground city that had been abandoned long ago, though it is said that it once rested on the surface before sinking beneath the ground. Something very bad happened their, as it is said, and it simply now known as the Necropolis.

Life down here is very specialized, and also very dangerous. Surface dwellers rarely go down here, save to go after the fabled treasures said to be found here, and even then they rarely ever return. Predators such as the deep ones, albino subterranean nagas who call the underworld their home, see to this. They are not alone, as strange elven-like being known as the shadowkin due to their ability to move through shadows, darkness elementals whose shadowy tentacles ensnare all who come upon them, and deadly bat-like harpies with superior hearing are also to be found here. However, not everything here is a predator, with such examples as giant woodlice-like creatures are to be found in the mushroom forests feeding on the shrooms themselves, as well as a variety of smaller animals. What is to be found in the sea is as of yet unknown as the few adventurers to make it there would not dare to enter its inky-black waters.

Their are said to be about a dozen entrances to the underworld. While most of them are hidden or are in areas to dangerous to enter, such as in the lower levels of the tonorion hive or deep within the Lataran temple, their are some which are considered relatively "safer". One of these is said to be found along the edge of Bulvon woods, though its exact location is unknown. It is rumored that there is an entrance by the great tree, though none have dared to go look for it.

Area

Flowering Fields

Located south of both the great rocky fields and mist ocean, this region consist of a massive field of flowers coming in a variety of species and colors. What makes this region so unique, though, are the massive "forests" of tree-sized flowers that dominate the area, some of which are nearly a hundred feet tall. Several species of flower can only be found here.

Due to the high concentration of flowers of both the normal and "jumbo" variety, once a year the sky becomes thick with the pollen and then seeds of species that rely on wind dispersion. Needless to say those with pollen allergies should avoid this area during those times. It has been noted that nature magic is particularly strong here, with many of the plants literally saturated with it. This appears to be one of the reasons for their massive growth and vibrant colors, not to mention their fragrant scents as well.

Most of the life in this region is highly camouflaged in order to mimic the flowering flora native here. Bloom dryads are relatively common here, as well as the many miaxi whose colonies pollinate the numerous flowers. A unique mantoid subgroup, the "flower mantoids", are expert mimics, coming in a variety of elegant forms that closely resemble the massive flowers from which they ambush their prey. The fauna, however, is not the only thing to worry about. Several of the flowering species known from here are actually carnivorous, their "flowers" hiding teeth-like structure between their petals which prevent prey from escaping once they have been caught. Despite these dangers, though, many still find this region to be one of the most beautiful in Felarya.

There has been an idea posted that was similar to this, and even in a similar location. I'm too tired to find it right now though.

Mhhh maybe you could find a reason why there is so many flowers there ?
What about the climate ? the interaction with the other zones ? For example is it misty as well ? etc..

Basically I think the base concept is really good but it needs to be more developped I think

Okay, here is an updated one with more info. What do you think?

Due to the sheer amount of towering flora, the "forest" floor is typically bathed in twilight dotted by numerous patches of light where openings appear between the flowers. Due to the close proximity to the mist ocean and the great rocky fields, sunshowers are relatively common, keeping the plants well moistured in the process.

Several species of rare flowers can only be found here, some of which possess medical value.

Due to the high concentration of flowers of both the normal and "jumbo" variety, once a year the sky becomes thick with the pollen and then seeds of species that rely on wind dispersion. Needless to say those with pollen allergies should avoid this area during those times. Occasionally these clouds of seeds or pollen will we be swept north by the winds, though the flowers wont grow outside the flowering fields for unknown reasons. It has been noted that nature magic is particularly strong here, with many of the plants literally saturated with it. This appears to be one of the reasons for their massive growth and vibrant colors, not to mention their fragrant scents as well.

Legend has it that the reason for why the flowers grow so large here but cannot anywhere else is due to the fact the flowering fields were supposedly planted, with the aid of magic, by a titan during their golden age. The flowers were grown to be larger so as to be "accessible" to those of giant stature. Some say that the titan remained neutral during the war against the guardians, and chose to not let the field spread so that others could not affect it with their own magic in order to aid themselves in the war. She was apparently punished, though by which side is unknown, and was buried within the field. Rumor has it that the titan still lives, but that it fused itself with the field over thousands of years, eventually becoming one with it.

Several of the flowering species known from here are actually carnivorous, their "flowers" hiding teeth-like structure between their petals which prevent prey from escaping once they have been caught. thank you, It works a lot better I think Smile

The Titan garden idea seems a bit far-fetched to me but I really loved the idea of having whole clouds of pollen drifting in the air. I imagine you could have even some legends about that, like for certain people living in a far away region, a certain type of pollen reaching them is an omen or something like that ^

Okay Karbo, got a new thing for the flowering fields involving the pollen and a "religion" surrounding it. Called Capitagiuspicy, the name originates from a fusion of the latin words for 'capitagium' (pollen) and 'specere'/'spectare' (to look/see). It is based on the Etruscans religious views were they interpreted divine signs out of such things as the flight patterns of birds and the composure of the liver.

Here is the new updated one. Bolded is the new info.

This appears to be one of the reasons for their massive growth and vibrant colors, not to mention their fragrant scents as well.

The clouds of pollen that float out of this field have become incorporated into a religion within the tribes living in the neighboring areas. Known as "Capitagiuspicy", this practice is led by a prime lectornus who "reads" the pollen in order to divine the will of the "Flower Goddess" who is said to inhabit the flowering fields. By studying the pollens coloration, smell, and even texture, the prime lectornus can "predict" when it will rain, how well the crops will grow during the growing season, learn of ones destiny, and even know whether or not it is safe to leave ones village without fear of predators. While looked down upon by most other religions, the readings have been surprisingly accurate, though many claim it is just a coincidence.

Most of the life in this region is highly camouflaged in order to mimic the flowering flora native here. Bloom dryads are relatively common here, as well as the many miaxi whose colonies pollinate the numerous flowers. Jadong Lake - Siren Sands

Siren sands is a rather large stretch of beach on Jadong lake. Located north of Bulvon woods and near the end of the Chordoni river, it is named after the numerous mermaids known to sunbathe on its soft warm sands during the early hours of the morning. While peaceful looking enough, one must always remember that dangers such as the fact that the infamous mermaid Anko lives nearby and wont think twice about snapping up an unwary adventure too close to the water with her frog-like tongue. While this alone would seem to be a strong enough deterrent to most adventures, many continue to go there. Knowingly risking the danger of being eaten, they come for the numerous ebony pearls that wash up on the sands. These pearls are highly prized, and even a handful of them is worth a small fortune. Where they keep coming from is unknown, though it is speculated that they originate from giant clams living on the bottom of Jadong lake. Though their origin is inconsequential, it is treasures like these that keep on attracting treasure hunters and keep on keeping predators like Anko full.

(based on the goro-goro creature submission)

Subarea

Great Rocky Fields - Firebolt Forest

Firebolt Forest is, despite its name, not actually an entire forest but instead several close growing patches of a strange alien "plant" known as the goro-goro. Found near the sulfur springs located near the boarder between the great rocky fields and Akaptor desert, these mini-forests are a strange sight. Bolts of lightning can be seen arcing between the "trees", giving the subarea its name, while the air itself appears thick with static electricity. The ground appears broken and ruptured due to the numerous roots that lay exposed near the surface. These roots are literally tripwires, and should something step onto them an arc of lighting is sure to shoot down upon the intruder, giving them a nasty zap. While non-lethal, this defensive feature serves as an excellent deterrent to both larger predators such as centaurs as well as clumsy humanoids. What makes this subarea even more dangerous is that the greater stormseekers have built several nests here for their young, as well as the lightning elementals who frequent this subarea and the storm sprites who view it as their "playground".

(optional)
While small for now, the firebolt forest still appears to be growing at a steady rate, and it is theorized by some that within a hundred years all the sub-forests will eventually connect into one. It has been noted that other plant life within the firebolt forest and its immediate proximity have been steadily dying off for unknown reasons, as well as the fact that the ground has taken on a yellowish coloration and now gives off the smell of sulfur.

Credit to CauldronBorn24 for helping with this idea of the Sulfur Springs.

Subarea

Great Rocky Fields - Sulfur Springs

The sulfur springs are large pools of sulfur found near the boundary between the great rocky fields and Akaptor desert. Bubbling constantly and with its contents nearly boiling, some speculate that their is in fact a magma chamber hidden deep beneath it which heats up the springs. Why the pools of sulfur have not completely combusted is unknown, though some say that magic is involved. At night the springs are lit by an eerily beautiful blue glow which originates from some of the sulfur being burnt off by the heat. It is rumored by the locals that a mysterious temple lays at the bottom of the largest of the springs, within which an ancient and powerful treasure is said to be hidden. The temple is said to only be revealed for one day every five hundred years when the sulfur levels mysteriously lower for unknown reasons. Some claim this temple is the reason for why the sulfur springs do not completely burn off. Besides this local legend, the only other points of interest are the beautiful formations of yellow sulfur crystals that dot the area in large amounts, some of which are of gigantic proportions. Because of this and the overall abundance of sulfur, this area is regularly mined by those willing to risk avoiding predators in order to do so. Luckily, however, few creatures actually live here save for those that are heavily specialized, and it is only the surrounding fields that hold the most dangers.

---------------------------------------------------------
Credit to Sehooligan for the idea of the stars dancing...

Subarea

Fairy Kingdom - Celestial Lake

The celestial lake is one of the many natural wonders of Felarya, and is found within the heart of the Fairy Kingdom. Fed by waterfalls at its northernmost bank, its sparkling waters are brimming with magic and are said to promote the greatest healing throughout Felarya. At night, the lake becomes like a crystal mirror, perfectly reflecting the stars as they dance upon its surface beneath the glow of the moon, thus earning it its name. During the early morning and late evening, a thin fog rolls over the lake, parted only by will-o'-the-whisps and naga fireballs as they dance alongside the local fairies. It is events such as these that have made this place sacred to fairy-kin, and thus on the night of the full moon they dance upon the waters surface in rituals that have been repeatedly since bygone times. It said that this is done so that they may communicate with the spirits of those whom have passed on from this mortal plane.

---------------------------------------------------------
Subarea

Fairy Kingdom - Crystal Lake

The crystal lake is a rather large lake found within the boarders of the Fairy Kingdom. While not as large as the northernmost celestial lake, it is still one of the larger bodies of freshwater to be found in Felarya. Its crystal clear waters are nearly as pure as those of the Fairy Pond, though it is not as permeated by magic. Its water are, however, said to promote great vigorousness to those who drink it, as the members of the nearby Kortiki town proclaim. Some even claim that bathing in its waters will heal ones wounds faster, as well as soothe nonphysical ones such as grief and loneliness. At night the waters of the crystal lake glow with an unearthly light that is said to be bright enough to read by. While the reason for this is unknown, local legends say that this is how the lake "purifies" itself.

---------------------------------------------------------
Subarea

Akaptor Desert - Ironcrust Mesa

Deep within the Akaptor desert there is said to exist a giant mesa that towers over the local sands. How it has resisted being buried beneath these very sands or even simply eroding way is unknown, but what is known is that the mesa, or at least its outer crust, is composed of a powerful lodestone. This magnetic granting property is strong enough to drag metal towards it from hundreds of feet away, as well as affecting compasses from miles further. Because of this, all compasses, when used in the Akaptor desert, are said to point towards this towering landmark. Few adventures, however, can actually make it there as it is located very deeply within the desert, with no water and only the scorching rays of the sun surrounding it for miles. Even the local nomads avoid this place, claiming it is cursed, though why it is they do not say.

(optional)
According to the accounts of one lucky adventurer who managed to make it to the ironcrust mesa and back, the mesa is apparently hollow. Apparently he found a strange looking passageway marked with runes he could not translate. After entering it in order to avoid the heat of midday sun, he claimed to have found an entire abandoned city which filled the entirety of the mesa. Despite being clearly abandoned for untold centuries, the city was still in excellent shape and even reminded the adventurer of some of the earlier ruins of Ur-Sagol. What was most surprising to him, however, was what appeared to be a dimensional gateway that, while not activated, still appeared to be fully functional. While he did not enter it before he returned back to civilization, his sketches of it and the city have sparked interest amongst the Ps'isol Magiocrats, especially as some of the evidence seems to imply that the city existed even before the legendary Akaptor was born.

Subarea
Islands of the Topazial sea

Umibozu Island

Located in the middle of the Topazial Sea, this moderate-sized island is shaped similarly to a dome. It is covered primarily by fields of grasses and shrubs, though their also exist groves of small trees along the islands eastern shore. Relatively unspoiled in terms of its natural beauty, the island possesses a bounty of animal and plant life. Many of these are smaller than their mainland cousins due to a lack of size and food, and this is best exhibited by the local torkudas are roughly only a quarter of their natural size.

The islands major features, besides its dwarf torkudas, are the Turtle Monastery and the Dragonfire reef. The temple is located near the islands center, and contains the islands native population. The reef, meanwhile, "protects" the waters surrounding the island, making them extremely treacherous to boats.

Turtle Monastery

With origins dating back several hundred years, this monastery was originally founded when a wayward ship of monks on a pilgrimage found its way into Felaryan waters through the Great Topazial Rift. The ship eventually wrecked itself on the reef surrounding Umibozu island, which at the time was uninhabited. The monks settled on the island, building the monastery. They are self-sufficient, developing numerous wells and gardens in order to support themselves

The monastery received its name the numerous statues of torkudas that decorate it, as the monks view them as spiritual creatures; their peaceful lives an example for them to follow. The monastery is rather elegant, possessing such features as zen gardens, though it is completely open to the torkudas who occasionally wander through them. There are little unnecessary comforts, the inhabitants preferring to live a more spiritual life in commune with nature.

The members of the monastery are pacifists, preferring nonviolent approaches to their problems. They should not be mistaken for pushovers, however. They are trained in various forms of martial arts, using them to defend themselves should they be threatened. This, however, is rather rare as they tend to be on rather peaceful terms with many of the other races in Felarya, and are far more accepting then some. In fact many of the members who joined over the years have come from other races, and all have been accepted as equals and without prejudice as they claim they are all beings seeking spiritual enlightenment.

Dragonfire Reef

Hidden by the murky waters that surround the island, dragonfire reef is named after the large percentage of dragonfire corals that it is composed of. These corals produce horrible burning stings, helping to convince many large predators to stay away. Besides this effect, the reef serves as an effective barrier against most ships, evident by the numerous shipwrecks that dot the sea floor and have since become overgrown by coral.

The reef is dominated by coral crabs, giant purple hermit crab-like creatures who carry miniature coral reefs on their backs in place of shells. They use the area as a nursery for their young, providing them the protection they need until they can grow a protective coral shell of their own. This is especially important as their taste is said to be exquisite.
