General Q and A Empty
PostSubject: General Q and A   General Q and A Icon_minitimeFri Oct 15, 2010 9:53 pm

While in the chatbox with DaNoob13 and Daejien, we came to a conclusion that a topic where one could ask basic questions about such things as the various races and places of Felarya; stuff that wouldn't typically warrant their own topics, such as minor questions relating to the biology of certain races or the physics of certain regions.

Some guidelines, based on what Anime-Junkie said:

*Ask one question at a time unless said questions are relevant to one another.
*Stay on topic. Once someone has answered the current question, then a new one can be suggested.
*If 3 days have passed and the last question has not yet been answered, then you may post a new one.
*Try to avoid asking questions that have already been asked on this topic.

-----------------------------------
Example:

I had a question that I posted on the chatbox. Would the blood coloration of a Chlaenas be like that of a cephalopod or like that of a human?

So this is just a general Q & A Thread. (Which would probably be a better name).

Anyway, I think this needs some guidelines:
  • One question at a time, it keeps things organised.
  • The current question = the topic. Don't go offtopic.

Anyway to answer you Jascon, I think that Chlaena blood would be blue like cephalopod blood.

I think it's a very good idea ! Razz

It's typically the kind of thread that can help flesh up things and maybe help come up with new ideas too ^^

Indeed. I also think it's a good idea to sticky this so people don't miss it and make a thread for a question that's easily answerable.

I'm probably going to abuse this thread in the long run, so bear with me.

As far as the mind abilities Phantom Elves possess, is it limited to transcending death only once? If not, what other powers do they possess.

(There are still other queries that haven't been answered yet, such as if Nekos use their high strength in short bursts or not, but the rules stipulate one question at a time.)

To quote the wiki:
"Phantom elves have incredible control over their soul and mind, and possess the unique ability to somehow transcend death: the soul of a deceased phantom elf can choose to re-enter its body a couple of seconds after death, healing it and reforming it in the process, effectively reviving the elf! This second life can only be used once though."

So yes, it only works once.

As for other powers, none are listed other than being able to see ghosts and spirits perfectly and mind affecting spells.
I think that while these are effective against ghosts and the like they would ahve have their uses against living being. It might be that the same spell would have different effects depending on whether the target is living or spirit.

No, I mean, as far as their great control over their soul and mind, is this all it can do, revive only once? The see ghosts and all have nothing to do with control over their souls, sort of. I'm asking if said control over their soul is only a single-use revival or if they have other tricks. Also, as far as spells goes, I only see it it's nowhere near as effective if you're not a ghost.

True, but think how much control it must take to transcend death. It's no small thing at all. It would well be that it is all they can do, but I suspect that the lack of other abilities is just due to lack of development.

Personally, that kind of control implies to me that Phantom elves could suppress pain to extraordinary levels as well as something like entering a trance to completely disconnect their mind from their body. That would be useful if they were being tortured , as they would not feel anything.

Any further development on this topic should be limited to a separate thread as the question has been answered, unless of course someone can see something I've missed in the wiki.

Since diamond nagas are rare and live deep within caves what exactly do they eat for an alternative since there's not many humans or nekos around?

My guess would be other subterranean species such as lucicamps, banshees, lost explorers, etc... They probably have a very slow metabolism and don't need to eat very often.

This just occurred to me, but with everything being immortal in Felarya, what prevents species which possess continual growth throughout their lives, such as lobsters and snakes, from growing to sizes that would dwarf even the largest of preds. Limits such as space and food wouldn't likely be a problem seeing as Felarya is huge and, as said creatures grow, more food sources would become "available".

Huh. My best guess would be that the large size attracts predators, so they're gone before they get the chance to become super-massive.

A second, crazier supposition would be that the Square-Cube Law still applies within Felarya, but most of the giant species (specifically the taurian ones) are specially engineered to resist it and still maintain slim sizes (a magically-strengthened cell structure, perhaps?).

Humans, nekos and things like that are like treats to predators. They don't eat them all the time. They mainly live on smaller fauna around them. As Jascon said: subterranean species like lucicamps, banshees, etc.
(We really need to lay out Twinkie Theory on one place that we can link to).

-Phantom elves do possess other abilities that can be devleopped I imagine but the second life is their natural one.

-As for diamond nagas, well their zone would need to be developped first but since it's supposed to be the stuff of legends that would be hard XD

-I imagine There are truly gigantic animals existing in Felarya, but most of them fall prey before that to something bigger that doesn't have that perpetual growth. The question is interesting though. Are they lot of such animals ? ^^

Like the second life is one as natural as breathing and do it subconsciously most of the time?

http://earthsky.org/biodiversity/do-some-animals-grow-throughout-their-lives

This should shed some light on it. It states that most fish, amphibians, lizards, and snakes are indeterminate growers, as well as some rare mammalian cases such as kangaroos. While disease, predators, and food/water sources would typically limit their growth, the fact that Felarya lacks disease and has plenty of food/water for creatures of all sizes, two factors are already removed. This leaves only larger preds to control the numbers of steadily growing animals.

People have brought that up before in regards to nagas. So far, the general consensus has been that they lack that particular snake trait. No one wants a 1000ft tall Crisis =P

To submit characters and ideas, do we simply create a thread on them or is there another step to take?

Just create a thread. Other forum members will help out with critiques and suggestions to potentially improve the idea/make it fit better. That's really the advantage of this forum over, say, DA. More criitques and generally more thurough ones too.

I noticed that on their page, not all Succubi are demons. Anyone care to elaborate on this, cause I assumed that Succubi, by their very nature, were demons.

Wow, I dunno how I missed that. I can understand the "not innately evil" part bout not all being demons? That just doesn't make sense.
Unless there is a way for other races to become succubi. In that case I would count them as demonic anyway.

" not all succubi are innately evil, nor are all demons. "

Ok there is a formulation problem here ^^;
What I wanted to say is that not all succubi are innately evil and that not all demons are innately evil either ( "demon" is a pretty vague term to start with )

I've always thought that demons just 'do their job', which can be pretty nasty, given they're in the worst working conditions the can have: being in Hell. And those who can stay a bit out of it, they tend to be mischievous, curious or evil, but not always all of them at the same time. Same goes for Succubi.

Maybe you should rewrite that part for avoiding more confusion, Karbo. Though I understood it perfectly. xD
