Siren Fish Empty
PostSubject: Siren Fish   Siren Fish Icon_minitimeMon May 03, 2010 8:52 am

Danger: Males: Minimal
Females: Moderate

Size: 20'--30'

Description:

Siren fish are a somewhat common specimen among the rivers and lakes of Felarya, particularly the lakes. They resemble silver-scaled catfish with a double pair of long whiskers; they are basically harmless to those who are 30'-and taller.Male Siren fish are usually somewhat shy, and even if a human were to jump into the water and swim around they could easily frighten the fish away. Female Siren Fish, however, are more voracious and have a unique way of hunting their prey.

Almost all female Siren fish have magical ability, the mana being stored within their second pair of whiskers, and they use this ability to create special mirages that are commonly known as "sirens" (hence thier namesake). These apparitions take the shape of naked, beautiful pale-skinned women of about 5' in height*(although size differs greatly), and lure adventurers into the water so that the fish may prey upon them. Usually, the mirages only laugh gaily and sing incredibly beautifully to bait their prey, although older, more mature Siren fish are able to produce sirens who can actually speak to human travellers (even older fish are also able to produce sirens that are clothed in flowing linen dresses). Usually there is a school compiled of 7-8 sirens, although this can change with the age and skill of the fish in question. Many a male adventurer have met their doom at the batting eyelashes of a group of beautiful sirens, although there is a catch. The sirens are only dangerous if you allow them to lure you into the water. If you keep your distance from the shoreline, you are safe from the danger of the waiting Siren fish. Some seasoned adventurers have found that they may take certain....liberties with the sirens, so long as they don't touch the water.

Giant male predators are, of course, immune to this illusion, as well as all female humanoids-- they just don't see the sirens, only detecting a certain magical disturbance that give away their presence. Also, there have been reports of truly ancient Siren fish who has been known to befriend and hold conversations with wisened Mages and adventurersthrough the use of her sirens. These fish generally loose interest in baiting young adventurers through the use of lewd behavior-- this is usually indicated by the clothing of the sirens in question. Their only care is to collect and store mana in their whiskers; feeding off the waterbed sediment, which naturally contains trace amounts of the magical property that permeates most of Felarya. These ancients are described as kind and gentle, as well as willing to share some of their wisdom to younger explorers. They are incredibly rare and greatly treasured, and to kill one for the sake of her meat is very frowned upon.

I think the idea is nice ^^ I especially like the fact wiser fishes can communicate through their illusions. lot of things to do with that trait Smile

Not minimal, then, moderate.

In fact many Giant predators and even smaller humanoids see them as a treat, as their flesh is pleasantly sweet to taste. Among neko tradition, to be served Siren Fish is a great honor.Male Siren fish are usually somewhat shy, and if a human were to jump into the water and swim around they could easily frighten the fish away. So, they're edible and eat only smaller creatures? That almost needs no pointing.

Alright, it's incredible that it's frowned upon at all. Maybe frowned upon by the wizard they were talking to... you know, sentience and intelligence have never been held in high regard around here.

I don't know where you're coming from with this comment

Males= minimal, because they're pussies
Females= moderate, just like any female on felarya

I'll cut it out, but it's pointed so that toxic blood/same-size vore would be counted out. Anything's possible; clarification was needed

But wisdom is pretty treasured, and it goes without saying that killing something OR having something killed that A) means you no harm and B) can help you survive in a world like Felarya for the petty sake of foodstuffs is a pretty dumb-ass move

But thank you for the feedback ^^ I look forward to hearing more

A) Weren't they luring adventurers to omnomnom them? That kinda falls in the human definition of meaning people harm.
B) Rule #2: Everybody is always in the menu. Even people who aren't in Felarya at the time.

Seriously, in Felarya, only your friends and their mother would frown upon anyone eating you. As far as anyone but wizened old mages care, that fish's only another predator. Wise and ancient it may be, Siren Fish wants one thing: to f*** Elsie.

Sorry, inside joke. Being wise and ancient only makes it worse as far as anyone but itself and its friends are concerned. You might want to elaborate on it being approachable, or else, its wisdom is its own problem.

Oh shit! XD Dude, you're totally right.

Okay, that's my mistake. I didn't specify that the fish that are "old as Methuselah" arent' inherently interested in luring adventurers in order to eat them (old weary body, dusty bones, not in the mood to chase people; sustained by sirens who feed off veggies grown from magical soil)

Alright, so based on this there's a major re-write in need. I probably won't do it now, but it should make the description more stream-lined and clear ^^;;

Again thanks and sorry for the misunderstanding XD
