A long while back during the Angels and Succubi Felarya group contest, I had trouble thinking of something to write about with what was around...so I made something up for it. The post here is a more wiki style form of the idea, and any input to improve or expand on it would be greatly appreciated- I fear no critiques
. At the bottom I'll post a link to the story this featured the idea in to give an idea of it in use. The last paragraph was more a 'for fun' random tidbit, in reaction to a certain comment I got when chatting with it one time that may be better suited as a rumor thing instead to be removed. I'll leave that up to you guys.
Guardian Angels
The world of Felarya is infamous for its harsh and lethal dangers that can all too often cut the life of a soul too soon before it has developed. For this end, the hosts of Heaven created a role for angels known as the ‘Guardian Angel’.
Guardian Angels are another of the types of jobs in Heaven, like those of a Psychopomp or even a ‘Shoulder Angel’. Their defining job function is simple: find and protect potentially ‘good’ souls so that they can develop more safely and in effect become even purer good souls later in their life. The difficulty that comes with this however is much greater than the other jobs. Unlike a quick visit to retrieve a soul, or pop in to offer some advice; a Guardian Angel has to be ready to perform their job for even an entire day at a time without rest- a great stress on their ability to hold their form. As a general rule of thumb they can be considered a few steps up in terms of ability as opposed to these other jobs, mostly borne out of necessity for the job they inhabit. Guardian Angels are also noted for having a strong sense for detecting the energy of a soul to find a potential charge to protect. Most Guardian Angels actually are even former Psychopomps that have changed jobs due to this necessary skill.
Despite their greater magical abilities, Guardian Angels actually are forbidden from directly assisting their charge and are required to act as covertly as possible. The soul they have chosen to protect is required to never learn of their presence. They are assigned to protect their charge so that they may develop on their own towards being a pure soul- not make the choices for them and in effect weakening the value of the soul by having them believe some force of Heaven is blessing their every action and inspire no desire to improve one’s self. To this end Guardian Angels follow a strict set of rules when operating to ensure a soul may grow on its own, with the topmost rule being no direct interference. Typical methods employed are using a gust of wind or a noise to draw one’s attention to a danger to avoid…though there are some blurry lines such as dropping heavy objects onto a threat to thwart it where appropriate if they remain unseen. This last example having been exempted from the direct interference rule due to the increasing amounts of Klonk converts as a result. The only time the rules are suspended are new Guardian Angels taking their first day on the job as an exempt day to learn their complex role.
No soul has a Guardian Angel assigned to them for their entire life however, as beyond a certain time their soul has matured enough that their Angel may leave and find a new one to look out for. Granted how long this process can sometimes take, this can be a very stressing job on an Angel to have to let go of someone they nearly raised.
It is interesting to note that when the forces of Hell got wind of this initiative before them, they actually applauded the forces of Heaven for ‘being sneaky’ and having finally learned how to be deceitful, as much as Angels may deny it. Following their initiative, it is believed Hell has started its own program to invest in impure souls and has even gone as far as making a large banking exchange on it which demons buy and sell prospective souls.
