It's Botany Time!

So, as I've read through the wiki gathering information and such, and noticing trends of new ideas, I have witnessed several people using the term deciduous to describe trees.



This is Felarya. It is generically agreed upon that there are no formal seasons, just localized weather patterns. So how can the trees be deciduous? That term is generally specified for the loss of leaves on a seasonal basis, though it can refer to other times as well such as inherently dry seasons in tropical environments. I think a more accurate disposition for trees in Felarya would be either semi-deciduous or marcescent. This would mean that the trees lose their leaves before each growth cycle for the former, or retain a dessicated leaf structure for portions of the year (like an oak tree) for the latter.



What say you on the topic?

Perhaps a possible explanation is that since the soil of Felarya is so rich in magic (such as the healing property associated with it), the "deciduous" trees gradually absorb it. In order to prevent themselves from becoming overloaded with magical energies, they have evolved the ability to funnel the excess magic into their leaves and then shed them. The leaves then return the magic back to the soil over time and the cycle is repeated.

This could also affect the Nature affinity of magic, creating "seasons" where it is stronger and weaker depending on the time of year when the trees shed their leaves.

As a resident of Michigan, I must say that if Felarya's trees changed in a Fall-like manner, the amount of joy I would express would probably overload the internet.

That being said, I have no clue how to pull that off. Perhaps what Jasc said, or maybe they would just change regardless of anything?

Hey fellow Michigander!

How about we have a living embodiment, similar to Elementals? I'm not well versed in Felarya yet. I've still got much to study. But it seems to me that a Guardian of Time is reasonable. This Guardian would oversee the passage of night, day, and the four seasons. This changing of the seasons is necessary to evenly distribute weather patterns around the world that Felarya exhists in. Without even distribution, many areas would suffer from relentless periods of blazing summer or freezing winters. The changing of seasons allow for a variety of plantlife to take hold in Felarya, instead of those adapted only towards specific climates.

In addition, since time and space are definately intertwined...
The Guardian also serves as an anchor that keeps Felarya from slipping out of the delicate balance of spacetime that it hangs in. Obviously, Felarya lies in a very volatile niche in the multiverse which makes the Guardian's task extraordinarily demanding.

Just a thought. Sorry if that is not in line with the way Felarya is designed. I often have suggestions that just don't work here. I'm still trying to figure things out.

It's alright, you're new so I give you leway

The existence of seasons is dependent on a tilted axis, since there is none, felarya cannot have seasons. As such, the plant life has evolved to deal with it that way.

I think you're right about the Guardian's job being demanding though, however I don't think they oversee seasons ^^; Although there's a thread for discussion about the seasons, but I forgot where it was.

I'd like to just agree with aethernvale about the trees.
