Condensing Races Empty
PostSubject: Condensing Races   Condensing Races Icon_minitimeTue Dec 03, 2013 8:43 am

I think certain races in the minor races sections should be condensed with some of the major races. The idea behind it is that some major races have sub-species that aren't technically related to them, but follow the same general idea, so they're classified as such. For examples, the Gerridis aren't related to Dridders, half-human/half-water strider versus half-human/half-spiders, but they follow the same general idea, a tauric creature that vaguely resembles a dridder, so they're in the same page.

However, you have something like the Gyspas and the Achigates, wasp creatures and snail creatures respectively, but aren't classified as sub-species of Miaxi and Slug Girls respectively, even though Gerridis and Dridders are. By the same token, Harpies and Banshees are considered related, although Banshees in the context of Felarya take more after bats, yet Actinaes, sea anemone possessing the upper body of a woman, aren't classified as related to Dryads, even though their entry note similarities to Dryads.

In my opinion, I think races should be condensed as such: Gyspas are considered related to Miaxi and should be given a link to their entry as part of the Sub-species sections. Achigates should be considered related to Slug Girls. Actinaes should be considered related to Dryads. Inus should be considered related to Nekos, since they follow the same general ideas, human like creatures with a few animal traits, in this case dogs instead of cats. By the same token, Kitsunes, if they're gonna be followed up on at least, should be related to Inus. Finally, Razias should be related to Harpies, since they're bird creatures, even though Razias appear to be based on running birds.

I also think other races in the Minor Race page should be re-arranged. I think Ghosts, Genies and Vampires should be removed, since they don't really constitute races in my opinion and seem more like very unique cases. Ghosts are classified as a generic term for various types of immaterial and spiritual beings, not really races, and Vampires can't even be created on Felarya, unless these vampires are completely different from what most people think of vampires, in which I think it would be worth elaborating on. In fact, I find it odd that Vampires are listed as a minor race, but were-creatures aren't, especially since they're mentioned when the wiki makes mention that the odd phases and number of moons leave were-creatures constantly half-transformed. I know that Elementals aren't too different from ghosts, but Elementals in Felarya are more akin to spirits possessing a chunk of matter or some form of energy, rather than just some embodiment of an element, so they have their own unique identity in the context of Felarya. The same goes for Genies, I feel like they lack something that makes them stand out from standard genies found in other fiction. I also think Titans should be removed since they're basically extinct. I know that the top of the article mentions races that are "too extinct", but if they've been wiped out to the last, then they no longer are a race. As a compromise, maybe we could make a new page listing mythological creatures, since that's basically what Titans are in the context of present-day Felarya.

Moving on, I think Giants should be moved to the Human's page. Giants are also classified as a blanket terms for any super-sized member of a certain race. For example, Crisis isn't just a Naga, she's a Giant Naga. Anko isn't a just a mermaid, she's a Giant Mermaid. The reason why I think it should go in the Human's page is because instances of giant humans are just called Giants. By the same token, I feel like Tomthumbs should also be moved to the Human's page simply cause they're tiny humans. (aside note: I think Liliputians or something would have made more sense since Tom Thumb was a character's given name, but whatever).

One last touch up would be the Lemurians. I can't tell if they're supposed to be human-sized or tiny, since their entry mentions they're friendly to Neeras, which could imply kinship as fellow tiny. If they are, then I think they should be redirect to the Tinies' page.

Anyway, does that sound reasonable or do you think there are some problems with that, besides the massive editing?

Maybe Ghosts and Vampires can be listed under the generic term "Undead" and that one could be classified along with were-creatures as "Non Felaryan Creatures" or something of that sort.

I think Elementals are good as they are with a page of their own. Though maybe Genies can be considered a subtype of Magic Elementals?

I wasn't saying that elementals should be removed, I just said that ghosts and elementals weren't too different, since there are instances of both sapient and non-sapient ghosts and elementals, but since elementals in Felarya are more like possessed matter and energies (except for darkness, though maybe the fact Felarya is saturated magic has something to do with it), they stand out more than the typical elemental. Admittedly, I worded it really badly earlier, so I apologize for the confusion.

I don't really like the idea of a Non-Felarya Creature page, since that would mean listing every single species that exists outside of Felarya, and it would also defeat the purpose of listing creatures unique to the setting in my opinion.
