Outside from the obvious freezing problem, seeing a frost slug while adventuring must be a very pretty sight actually :O

I agree this is a neat idea
A frost slug would looks nice visually and it's original too since you don't usually associate the two together. Nice job ^_^

Thank you both.

------------------------------

Cryomander
Size: 35 feet
Threat: Medium
Habitat: Imoreith Tundra

Native to the far north, cryomanders are distant relatives to the more tropical salamanders. Instead of possessing a mastery of flames and fire, these pale blue to glacier white lizards are able to command ice and snow with a finesse that would make a frost elemental envious. They can seemingly melt into the surrounding snow, then pop up behind their prey within seconds, transform into an icy fog that freezes over whatever it comes into contact with, or even unleash a blast of breath so cold that it can turn a would be assailant into an frozen statue. Rarely seen out in the open, cryomanders instead prefer to make their nests within frigid fortresses and icebound forts that randomly dot the tundra.

Of interest is that according to myth, should a cryomander take on a form of ice and wind up being shattered, all the resulting fragments will have the potential to "regenerate" into a new individual. Whether or not they truly possess this ability is unknown, though some have claimed to have witnessed this occur.

Hildisvíni
Size: 40 feet
Threat: Medium
Habitat: Elifga Valley, Imoreith Tundra

Great white boars native to the Imoreith tundra, Hildisvíni are renowned for their ferocity and fearsome spirit. Covered in a dense, near-impervious fur that can resist even steel, and armed with impressive spear-like tusks that can gore a full-grown kensha beast in seconds, these giant wild boars are one of the more dangerous threats one can encounter this far north in Felarya. Once riled up, a grown bull will chase down its assailant for days on end until it catches it, looses the scent, or finally succumbs to exhaustion. Luckily, Hildisvíni tend to stick to the more uninhabited regions of the Imoreith tundra, and thus aren't as major a threat as they could be. There is one group that will leave the tundra: pregnant sows. These individuals will come to the warmer Elifga valley for the more plentiful food and better climate that is more suitable for raising their piglets in. During these times the mothers can be quite overprotective of their young, but tend to use more show than force when it comes to defending them.

Pincoy
Size: 14 to 18 feet long
Threat: Low
Habitat: Shimmering Sea

Large pinnipeds native to the Shimmering sea, their appearance has been considered comparable to what the offspring of a walrus and an elephant seal would look like. Equipped with thick skin, a layer of blubber, a pair of mighty tusks, and a short trunk-like nose, they are readily differentiated from other seals and sea lions native to the same region. Males both outsize and outweigh the females by several tons, and stand out in the colonies these sea mammals form on the various shores, islands, and the occasional massive crystal formation. Said males tend to have massive harems and will fiercely defend them from potential competitors. While fights due break out, most males will actually sing as a first means of competition, producing rather serene, whale-like songs. The better singer will often get the females, though a sore loser may still initiate an attack.

Pincoys feed primarily on small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. They are in turn hunted by various predators such as sharks, sea draugars, killer whales, etc... Colonies tend to be avoided by the larger sapient predators, mostly due to all the commotion, noises, and smells. However, while out at sea, a lone pincoy is fair game for any giant pred that should come across it.

Sea Draugr
Size: 25 feet long
Threat: Moderate
Habitat: Shimmering Sea

Sea draugars are aquatic predators native to the Shimmering sea. While serpentine in shape, they have rather compact, muscular bodies built for speed and power. Their heads are rather draconic in appearance, and a pair of lizard-like forelimbs with webbed claws are used not only for grappling large prey but also for allowing them to drag themselves onto land for short periods of time. Their tails are very eel-like, as is their skin, which is smooth and somewhat slimy, and typically of a shade of dark blue or black. In lieu of scales, underneath their skin are tiny bony nodules that offer them protection akin to chainmail armor when it comes to deflecting attacks. Interestingly, sea draugars lack eyes, relying on a powerful combination of echolocation and smell in order to detect and track down their prey.

Filling out an ecological role similar to that of great whites or killer whales, sea draugars are the major predators of the Shimmering sea, at least when it comes to hunting down large fishes and seals. While certainly not as great a threat as the giant mermaids and selachis, they are still dangerous to shipwrecked sailers and such, especially with their shark-like teeth. Just being near the water's edge can be dangerous as a full grown sea draugr can easily launch itself out of the water and drag something back into it. When not hunting or fighting one another when it comes to picking mates, these solitary creatures will often bask themselves on the numerous large crystals and Eidoron rocks that dot the Shimmering sea.

Teuthidante
Size: 80 to 120 feet long
Threat: Medium to Very High
Habitat: Evernight Forest, Tenebra Maze

A creature of shadows, both figuratively and literally, teuthidantes are found only in the darkest, dankest places in Felarya. They resemble immense squids in appearance that float and swim through the darkness, similarly to shadow fish, and which are completely black in color, save for their eyes, which glow like searchlights. Patient and deadly, these predators wait within the confines of their dark lairs, and then, like a fisherman and his rod, extend their tentacles outwards in the hopes of coming upon a potential morsel. Once they have something, they will enwrap it with its other tentacles before dragging it back in towards its waiting maw.

Despite being able to prey upon nearly whatever they come upon, such as young shadow serpents or shadow fish, they are not without their own predators. Because of their boneless, "squishy" nature and the fact that their tentacles make up the majority of their length, their great size does not provide them with as much protection as one would think. An adult shadow serpent or darkness elemental only 1/2 to 3/4 their size will be able to gulp them down with ease. For protection from such threats, when threatened teuthidantes are able to release a cloud of floating, luminous ink to distract and disorient them while they themselves slip away.

Teuthidantes can be a dangerous threat for miners who dig too deep. The possibility for stumbling into the lair of one always exists, usually resulting in one coming across dozens of hanging luminous egg sacs just before a pair of glowing luminous eyes and writhing tentacles seemingly materialize out of the darkness.

PostSubject: Re: Jasconius' Creature Ideas and other Concepts   Jasconius' Creature Ideas and other Concepts - Page 7 Icon_minitimeThu Jul 14, 2011 10:40 am

The pamola is based after the pamola of Abenaki mythology.
The echine is based upon the echinemon of medieval mythology.
---------------------------------

Pamola
Size: 20 to 25 foot wingspan
Threat: Low to Moderate
Habitat: Frost Peak

When traveling amongst the mountains north of the great marshes, one may hear the thunderous cry of the pamola echoing throughout every peak and valley. A large, heavily-built eagle with faint blue to snowy white feathers, it is instantly recognizable by a pair of moose-like antlers that grow from each side of its head. Both genders have these antlers, though in males they are larger and more pronounced. Equipped with powerful lungs they are able to fly about the white-capped peaks despite the low oxygen levels, and with their unrivaled eyesight they can spot prey trudging through the snow from miles away even during the middle of a snowstorm. They mate for life and make their nest within protected crags, both mates taking turns to hunt for food while their vulnerable chicks are safe from such predators as the dreaded ice wyrm. Pamolas don't often view humanoids as prey and instead go after smaller game.

These antlered eagles have come to be revered by several of the tribes that live under the shadows of the mountain chains they inhabit. Shamans who wear the skulls of the pamola during ceremonies believe that their people will be protected from both harm and predators by the spirit of the bird. It is also believed by them that these eagles are the cause for the cold weather of Frost Peak and that they bring snow with them wherever they fly. While this is viewed as nothing more than mere superstitious local myths, some explorers and adventurers have noted feeling a cold wind blow past them right before encountering a pamola.

While these birds are often found only around Frost Peak, during Kris' Maas they can be found throughout Felarya, seemingly taking advantage of and frolicking over the briefly snow-covered land.

Echine
Size: 1 to 2 feet long
Threat: Low
Habitat: Sunken Forest

Also known as the "drake rat", echines are large rat-like vermin that somewhat resemble furry crocodiles in appearance. Equipped with powerful back legs, they can leap from tree to tree with ease, a trait useful within the Sunken Forest. They are the absolute bane of venomous snakes and lizards that inhabit this vertical swamp, feeding almost exclusively upon them. In order to hunt such dangerous prey, they bathe themselves regularly in mud, then allow the coat to dry, before repeating these two steps several more times. Once its "armor" is fully applied, typically with six to seven layers, it can then hunt its prey with impunity. Eventually the armor will completely dry out and fall off, but before it does the echine can hunt as many venomous reptiles as it wants too.

Because of their diet, echines are sometimes used to keep the populations down of snakes and such in populated areas.

Glaceo
Size: 10 to 12 feet long
Threat: Moderate
Habitat: Imoreith Tundra

White lions who rule the frozen plains of the far north of Felarya. Much more heavily built than the typical lion, they are covered in a dense white fur coat that not only insulates them from the cold, but helps them to blend in with the surrounding snowy plains as well. Their large, wide paws give them excellent traction on the snow covered terrain of the tundra, allowing them to run quickly over short distances without much effort, and at the same time giving them such a powerful swipe that they can often end most hunts with a single swing. Their most prominent feature is the pair of large saber-like teeth that dominate their upper jaws, giving them an appearance that is somewhat reminiscent to that of saber-toothed cats. These teeth are often used to end the struggles of pinned down prey with a single, precise bite.

The males, because of their greater size, prominent manes, and larger saber-teeth, rule the pack. They will fight off whatever challenge comes their way, be it a younger male or larger predator, yet otherwise are rather laid back. It is instead the smaller females who do all the hunting and such, stalking the tundra for such favored prey like the taranei.

Thank you!

I gotta say mythology has had some weird creatures in it. Apparently in traditional medieval mythology, the echinemon (also known as an Ichneumon) upon which the echine was based was supposedly the enemy of dragons. It would apply the mud armor before going off to kill them. Other variances had it instead be the killer of crocodiles and venomous snakes, but retained the mud armor.

Stalacmite
Size: .5 to 2 feet tall
Threat: Low to Moderate
Habitat: Mysterious Temple, Underground

Stalacmites are oversized mites identifiable by the stalactite-like growths on their backs. Living in underground caverns and temples, they are both extremely patient and well camouflaged. Holding onto the ceiling with their claws, they look just like the stalactites that surround them. Waiting, sometimes even weeks at a time, for something edible to walk beneath them, they then release their grip on the ceiling and drop down. If they're lucky, they'll pierce through their intended target and either knock it out or kill it outright, after which they will feed. Should they instead miss, they'll typically shatter against the ground with a satisfying splatter. Those that manage to survive will eventually gorge themselves, lay their eggs in what's left of the meal, and then return to the ceiling to lie in wait again.

Kumo
Size: 1 to 15 feet in diameter
Threat: Medium
Habitat: Sunken forest, Negav

Kumos are one of the more prominent denizens of the Sunken forest. Resembling oversized jumping spiders, they are well adapted to dominating the predatory niche of the region, for not only are they capable of climbing across all surfaces presented within the Sunken forest, but they can also make their way from tree to tree with their impressive jumping abilities. And should they ever miss a jump, they can always rely on a silk tether to pull themselves back up with. Combined with their near-silent movements and speed, as well a potent poisonous bite, they can often take down such prey like ringhorns long before they ever realize they've been bitten. Despite their prowess when it comes to hunting, kumos are not at the top of the food chain, and such predators like colmoteles include them in their diets.

Kumos are also present in Negav. Descended from a species of pygmies that, at most, only reach a foot or two in diameter, they have long since been domesticated as pets. While not as commonly kept as other pets are, they are certainly not considered to be very rare. Designer breeds are not uncommon. Those that haven't been defanged are often used to hunt such pests as micrats, a task that they excel at. Behaviorally, they are not much different from a cat, save for having a much greater sense of curiosity, a trait that can often get them into trouble.

Subarea of the Great rocky fields.

Pyrodian Prairie
Danger: Normal
Inhabitants: Centaurs, Scorpisaïs

Located along the southernmost fringes of the Great rocky fields, this region is dominated by vast grasslands and an arid climate. With the Akaptor desert so close, the air here is very dry, leading to many brushfires that rush across the prairie within hours, leaving only ash and smoke behind. Life has adapted to this, with many grasses having evolved deep roots that can quickly regrow their leafy shoots soon after being burned, thriving in the nutrient rich soil left behind by the fires. In fact, many of the plants here would be unable to propagate without the fires! Having earned the nickname of "fireworks-flora", all kinds of species, from tallgrasses that ignite like sparklers to diminutive trees whose pods launch themselves into the air before bursting into fluorescent flashes of falling seeds, are to be found here, forming brilliant spectacles for all to see.

Because of the brushfires that frequent this region, most creatures that are to be found here have had to adapt accordingly. Many are fire-resistant, being protected by thick shells or large stores of water. Others have merely need to fly over the flames, or outrun them the best they can. All have learned, however, that food can be quite plentiful during these fires, especially with the plethora of rodents, insects, and reptiles that attempt to escape them.

While rainfall is rare here, water is still to be found here, located within the numerous cenotes that dot the grassland. These treasured sources of water are frequented by many of the inhabitants of the region, and without them, the Pyrodian prairie would have likely become a desert centuries ago. They are also not without their mysteries, for who knows what may lie hidden deep within the waterlogged tunnels these sinkholes connect to.

PostSubject: Re: Jasconius' Creature Ideas and other Concepts   Jasconius' Creature Ideas and other Concepts - Page 7 Icon_minitimeSun May 13, 2012 2:56 pm

Been a while since I've been on here, but here's a new idea of mine. It's intentionally meant to be a "joke" creature.

Anihat
Size: Depends on hat being mimicked
Threat: Minimal to High (Hair, Barbers)
Habitat: Negav

At a glance, an anihat looks like nothing more than an ordinary hat. In reality, this loathed parasite is the end result of a prank of a novice mage gone awry. Expert mimics, they resemble a wide assortment of hats, with different subspecies taking on the appearance of different styles. When their hosts of choice – humans, elves, nekos, etc… – unassumingly put an anihat on their heads, the parasite will latch on and perform its much despised task: devouring all the hair off one’s head via licking it off. This task is accomplished with the aid of specialized enzymes in their saliva, ones that are capable of dissolving hair within minutes. Once their appetites are satiated, they will drop off and scurry off, revealing their true nature in the process. This consists of sprouting three sets of crab-like legs and a pair of antennae from their tops.

The source of the “Great Balding Epidemic" of 1839 A.U. and the “Month of Hairlessness" of 2051 A.U., these parasites are hated by all and typically eliminated on sight. The only reason they have not been completely wiped out yet is the fact that they're rather difficult to destroy, at least by magical means. It turns out that anihats are surprising resilient to magic. This resilience also makes them almost impossible to detect via magic, so infestations of these hermaphroditic beasts can grow undetected for years. Thankfully, there numbers are kept in check by the gnawing of micrats, the appetite of moths, and of course by their natural predator, the toupee mimic.

PostSubject: Re: Jasconius' Creature Ideas and other Concepts   Jasconius' Creature Ideas and other Concepts - Page 7 Icon_minitimeThu May 17, 2012 9:45 pm

Hydragma
Size: 50 to 65 foot length
Threat: High
Habitat: Pyrale Mountains

Relics of an older age, the hydragmas are a very rare species that nowadays can only be found inhabit the lava-filled pools of the Pyrale Mountains. Like the hydras they are named after, each hydragma possesses multiple heads. Each of these is not unlike a moray eel in appearance – with fluorescent orange underbelly, backs seemingly composed of cooled lava, and teeth like obsidian – that stem from a singular, serpentine body. Ambush predators, they wait beneath the lava's surface until prey draws close, such as an adventurer-carrying annothian or young carbon hound separated from its pack. Once they are close enough, a hydragma will emerge from the lava and attempt to surround its unfortunate victim with its multiple heads, closing off any potential escape routes before striking. A good hunt can satiate one of these predators for several months at a time, during which they will hibernate, relying solely on thermosynthesis for energy. This process cannot sustain indefinitely, and they will eventually begin hunting once again. These brief respites are necessary, though, as prey can be rather scarce amongst the lava pools.

(optional)
Hydragmas are capable of breathing out cones of extreme heat. It is said that this breath can superheat the air to such a degree that not only will rocks melt before it, but most metals as well. Because of this ability, some say that the blacksmiths of Mount Vylkren, lava elementals with unsurpassed skill in their art, use these beasts as living furnaces in order to smelt down even the toughest of metals. Supposedly they also keep them as pets, and that this is the primary reason for the species survival over the years.

According to legend – though not at all validated – hydragmas will regenerate from any wound, no matter how severe, as long as they are within lava. They are said to even be able to regrow lost heads. It is said that the only way to prevent this and permanently put them down for good is to douse their wounds with water or engulf them in powerful ice magics.

Solaren
Size: 5 to 20 foot length
Threat: Minimal to Low
Habitat: Mist Ocean

Beings born of emotion, solarens are typically helpful spirits that can be found within the depths of the Mist Ocean. Appearance wise they are rather serpentine in form, somewhat resembling a long, translucent corkscrew with an orb of light where the head would be. This light serves as a beacon, one with which they guide the lost out of the Mist Ocean. They will even protect them from lesser spirits, keeping them at bay through the sheer strength of their aura.

Some solarens, however, are more malevolent than the rest of their kin. Born from negative emotions, such as anger, they are noticeably darker in coloration and produce an aura of malaise around themselves, one that will attract other harmful spirits to them. These solarens will not lead people to safety but into danger instead, such as into the maw of a waiting earth mouth. Thankfully, solarens such as these are few and far between, and those that do exist rarely last for long, collapsing under the weight of their own negativity. When this occurs, they leave behind a dark "pearl" of their essence, a thing of great value to alchemists and the like for its mystical properties.

(optional)
It is said in myths that solarens lead the spirits of the dead into the afterlife. This has earned them the nickname of "Spirit Lanterns".

Those are great ideas Smile
I liked the Hydragma used as living furnace by the blacksmiths of Mount Vylkren, and the anihat is a fun idea that could work I think XD
I'm sure you can find creatures more odd and umprobable than that in Felarya ^^

Ideas for the Akaptor Desert
---------------------

Vamerok
Size: 8 to 12 foot wingspan
Threat: Minimal

Distant relatives of the pteroks, vameroks are flying bird-like reptiles native to the Akaptor desert. Unlike their smaller kin, vameroks possess a secondary pair of wings, a crest akin to that to the head of a hammerhead shark, and a trio of tails connected to one another by colorful membranes. Using thermal columns while gliding in order to conserve energy, they form small flocks for both protection and hunting purposes. While normally known for going after insects and small lizards, they will also congregate around much larger organisms such as solar serpents, cleaning them of parasites and such. It is for this reason that they tend to be ignored by them.

A population of vameroks exists in Kelerm. A common sight, they are often seen gliding slowly over the various streets and docks. Slightly smaller than their 'wild' counterparts, these individuals have adapted to city life by becoming more opportunistic scavengers. From small vermin congregating in alleyways to unattended stalls, Kelerm offers a smorgasbord for whatever vamerok that is smart enough to exploit them.

Ninkilim
Size: .5 to 1 foot long
Threat: Minimal

Resembling oversized silverfish with reddish exoskeletons, ninkilim are to Kelerm as warp roaches are to Negav. These verminous insects will inhabit whatever nook and cranny they can find for shelter, removing an infestation of ninkilim is nearly impossible to do once they have established themselves. They are heavily opportunistic scavengers, feeding on almost anything that they can fit into their jaws, either whole or in pieces torn apart by mantid-like forelimbs. With only the kura for competition on the streets of Kelerm, the ninkilim have come to thrive in the underfoot of urbanized society, a stark contrast to their kin in the surrounding desert who are just barely able to eek out a living under much harsher conditions.

Because of how numerous they are, it is not uncommon to find ninkilim fried-up like shrimp in the poorer districts of Kelerm. They are also often used as bait for sandfishes and the like that inhabit the cities surrounding seas of quicksand.

- - -
Some more creatures from the homeworld of the sand whales, shimmerlings, and goro-goro.

Sirsir
Size: 6 to 10 feet long
Threat: Low

Hailing from another world, sirsirs bear a resemblance to seals, albeit ones covered in a crustaceous carapace and possessing beetle-like mandibles, three pairs of violet eyes, and a retractible sail on their backs. Known to congregate along the edges of the Sea of Sinking Sands as well as the docks of Kelerm, they regularly dive into the quicksand, being able to move through it as if it were water. It is here that they hunt the smaller species of sandfishes and the like that inhabit the quicksand. They are in turn hunted by larger predators such as sunas and time sharks. Because visibility is nonexistent while under the sand, sirsir both hunt their prey and detect predators via specialized electroreceptors capable of detecting electrical signals even through sand.

While generally quite mild in terms of temperament, they are capable of giving quite a nasty bite if disturbed, one that is amplified by a venom that is secreted by their jaws. This poison brings about a mild paralysis, as well as a slight sense of euphoria, in similarly sized organisms such as humans, though has little effect on larger ones. Despite this, they are still sought out for their meat and 'chitin', both of which are of great value.

Sand Ray
Size: 2 to 4 feet in diameter
Threat: Minimal

Resembling what can only be described as a multi-eyed, tailless stingray covered by a protective, chitinous exoskeleton not unlike that of a crab, sand rays are harmless inhabitants of quicksand. Also known as 'flapjacks' due to their appearance, they feed on shimmerlings which they filter out of the sand via two comb-like mouths located on their shaggy undersides. This 'shag' is in fact specialized villi-like tentacles with which the sand rays use to both move about and to manipulate larger clusters of food into their mouths.

During the night sand rays will often climb up onto solid structures, such as the odd rock or ship, and lay dozens of barnacle-like eggs that are protected by thick shells. Once the young hatch, they will parasitize a larger creature, not unlike the young of the goro-goro. This reproductive process is speculated to be connected to the phases of the moon, but given Felarya's lack of a stable lunar cycle, the sand ray populations have been increasing at a much faster rate then they should be.

I'm guessing that the theme for the sand whales' world was shelled versions of water critters that live in the desert?

Because believe it or not, it makes them sound like pretty good eating :3

Actually I was going for the shell part being a uniting factor showing common ancestry. That and I'm a fan of crustaceans, insects, cephalopods, and armored fish like placoderms.

I did suggest other creatures, such as an armored "blimp", tripod, etc... that didn't make it.

Ideas for Sunfall Thicket. First one is a modification of an older idea of mine.

- - -

Teuthidante
Size: 80 to 90 feet long
Threat: Medium

A creature said to be born from shadows according to old elven myths, teuthidantes - also referred to as 'night geists' by some - are found only within the depths of the Sunfall thicket, though claims of them being seen Ascarlin mines and Evernight forest have been made. Resembling immense, black vampire squids in appearance, they float about and seemingly swim through the darkness as if it were water, a trait they share with their favored prey, the shadow fish. Their eyes see on the infrared spectrum, allowing them to see their prey even when it is pitch black. Patient predators, they rarely go after prey directly, instead opting to spread their tentacles and wait. Should something brush against them, it will quickly become ensnared and then dragged back to a waiting maw to be swallowed whole.

While as adults teuthidante tend to have little to fear from other predators, their young are a different story. Of the hundreds born from egg sacs, only a few of the meter-long offspring will ever survive long enough to reach maturity. Many predators find young teuthidantes to be delectable, though that doesn't make them easy to hunt. If startled, they will expel a cloud of luminous ink in order to distract their hunters, as well as make any would-be predator more visible to other, larger creatures. Regardless, many young ones still end up in the gullets of other creatures before the end of their first year. Those that do survive will eventually become one the top predators of the night.

Lunar Weaver
Size: 15 to 20 feet in diameter
Threat: Low to High (ghosts and spirits)

While strolling through a clearing under a starlit night, one may see a magnificent silver web glittering under the pale moonlight. This would be the work of a lunar weaver, also known as a spirit-hunter spider by some. Unlike most of the larger arachnids to inhabit Felarya, these semi-translucent spiders are of little threat to humans, fairies, and the like. They instead prey upon ghosts and spirits, using their sticky webs - said to be enchanted by the light of the full moon and which the incorporeal cannot see - to capture them. Once one of these spectral beings becomes caught, the spider will then enwrap it with more of its threads, preventing its escape. Once that is accomplished and the specter is immobilized, the spider will then feed from it, draining the ectoplasm from its bodies. This is not a fatal process, however, for after this arachnid has finished its meal it will then release the spirit. From there it will be many days before it will fully recover and its ectoplasm is replenished.

The occasional human or fairy that may wander into lunar weaver's web is in very little danger. Designed to capture ghosts, the threads that compose it are relatively weak and easily pulled apart by mortal hands.

Moonhorned Goat
Size: 2 to 3 feet long
Threat: Minimal

Sometimes refereed to as the duikers of the Sunfall thicket, these silver-haired goats are at the very bottom of the food chain in this realm of eternal moonlight. With heads crowned by eight crescent-shaped horns, they are able to channel lunar light through them and thus are constantly surrounded by light, allowing them to see even within the darkness depths. However, this also makes them quite visible to predators, so moonhorned goats often travel in large herds that, when combined with their swiftness, makes it rather difficult for a predator to single out an individual.

Ideas for Underground fauna.
- - -

Shrouded Screecher
Size: 15 feet long
Threat: Moderate

Cousins to the better known howlers of the Mysterious Temple, shrouded screechers can be found at home within the deepest depths of Felarya, where the sun never shines. Because prey is scarcer in places such as this, these creatures are both smaller and more lightly built than howlers. Their fear-inducing screeches, however, are much more powerful in order to compensate. Any who hear their dreadful calls will feel as if a knife had been jabbed into their very soul before collapsing to the ground, overcome with fright. In this paralyzed state they become easy pickings for a hungry shrouded screecher.

Gloom Lurker
Size: 1 to 2 feet long (hunter-worker), 20 feet long (queen)
Threat: Low to Moderate

Little more than oversized, bloated pseudoscorpions, gloom lurkers are sluggish predators of little threat to anything larger than themselves if encountered alone. The only problem is that gloom lurkers are rarely ever encountered alone. These albinistic arachnids live in small colonies, typically consisting of a couple dozen individuals, ruled by a singular, massive queen. These hives are typically located along well trod tunnels and other pathways were food is plentiful, in the hopes that some poor sap will stumble too close. Once one does, they rush out all at once from their hidden hideaways, attempting to overwhelm their prey through a combination of surprise, sheer numbers, and of course their vicious pinches. If successful, most of the food will go to the queen and her larvae, thus fueling the next generation. Over time the hive, if it manages to survive long enough, will become too big and will then split up into several smaller ones, each consisting of several hunter-workers and juvenile queen.

Bone Maggot
Size: 1 foot long
Threat: Very Low

Despite their name, bone maggots neither feed on bones nor are they actually maggots. In actuality, these crimson-red, snake-like worms feed only on small insects, and who prefer dark, damp places to live in and avoiding fights at all costs. This doesn't mean they aren't without a means of defending themselves as they will snap back at would be attackers if cornered, though their tiny teeth, even if serrated, are far too weak to puncture the skin. Instead they prefer to expel a sticky, smelly slime from pores on their backsides, then escaping while their predators are distracted.

The origin of their name came about by the elvish emperor "Falian the Mad". Seemingly growing more insane towards the end of his rule and before his untimely death, one of his ways of dealing with dissidents and traitors was threatening to throw them into his pits filled with bone worms, a fate he claimed to be "worse than being left to the dridders and nagas, for while one would die quickly in their bellies, his maggots would take their time, gnawing your bones slowly while your still alive, screaming." While few did dare to test his claims of their prowess, the name nonetheless stuck with them long after the elven lord was long gone, though whether this is testament to either his mad genius or simply the great fear they potentially inspired, nobody knows.

Ferrouslug
Size: 40 feet long
Threat: Minimal

Ferrouslugs are massive slugs found in deep, dank places such as the expansive caverns of the Felaryan underground. They feed on various minerals and metals, most notably iron, which they are able to breakdown with the aid of enzymes akin to those produced within the stomachs of jotuns and nagas. It takes a lot to keep these eyeless giants satisfied, so more often than not one will find these titanous slugs endlessly grinding away at the rocky walls of their homes with the help of diamond-hard radula. After extracting what they need, they'll expel everything except for the iron, which is instead converted into a plated shell. These shells protect the ferrouslug from most predators and, as the surface rusts over time, gives the slugs their signature rusty coloration. As time goes by, the ferrouslugs will molt so as to be able to grow, shedding their armor. Miners are very grateful for this, as ferrouslug molts are easily accessed sources of pure iron.

Hmmm, the Teuthidante seem quite interest-- " Resembling immense, black vampire squids" Wait, what?
Appart from that, it's kinda strange that they would have light beacons as eyes when they are passive and just catch prey by staying still and grabbing them when they touch their tentacles... The lights would give them away instantly. The glowing eggs also make them a lot easier to find for other preds, but the luminous ink is a good idea.

I'm guessing Lunar Weavers' nets are invisible to ghosts. Otherwise they would be pretty to sight, but very ineffective. Can humans get stuck in them too, even if they are not feeded upon?

Bone Maggots have an interesting origin for their name. However, you state that they don't feed on bones to say later that they scavenge "carcasses", which is basically corpses, right? Then they actually DO eat bones after all?

Little typo at the Ferrouslugs: "Ferrouslugs are massive slugs found in deep, dank places such as the expansive caverns of the Felaryan underground.". Other than that, they are pretty neat! I like them pretty much. Also, when you say "After extracting what they need, they'll pass everything on except for the iron" you mean that everything else is digested or just expelled out as wastes? 'Cause they can be a pretty bad plague if they start spreading around Ascarlin mines...

The Moonhorned Goats, Shrouded Screechers and Gloom Lurkers seem good, nothing to highlight.

Okay, I made some edits based on what you said. As for your other comments, the vampire squid is real:

Also dank is a real word, it means dark/humid places.

My bad then, I didn't know that word. Should have used my dictionary before saying it was a mistake, geez. Aside from that, I'm glad I could be of help.

And wow, I didn't know about the vampire squid either! Nasty little creature, but interesting nonetheless. (Yeah, "interesting" seems to be my favourite word, doesn't it? XD)

Underground fauna.
- - -

Scarok
Size: 10 to 20 feet long
Threat: Medium

Hidden away in forgotten tunnels and ancient passageways, the scaroks have come to be known as the blind horrors of the underground. They have earned this title for a good reason, for appearance-wise they resemble large, bloated white toads with faces covered in writhing tentacles. Perhaps more gruesome than their appearance are their feeding habits. Lacking eyes or even a mouth, they rely on there powerful sense of smell in order to find prey. When they do, they pin it beneath the bulk of their bodies and then use their facial tentacles to pierce the skin, injecting a powerful paralytic poison as they do. Once their prey is fully immobilized, the scarok begin the grim process of slowly draining all the fluids out of their still living meal, eventually leaving only a dried husk for the scavengers.

When sleeping, scaroks hide inside cocoons they create from a slimy silk they exude from pores on their backsides. These cocoons help to keep them safe from predators by both hiding their body heat and masking their scent. Some adventurers who explore or who have become lost in the underground portions of Felarya have been known to utilize discarded cocoons in order to avoid predators themselves.

(optional, to give them a slightly more "eldritchian" flavor)
Strangely, scaroks seem to lack in uniformity when it comes to their internal body structure. Some individuals lack hearts or lungs, while others have been found to contain multiple sets of these organs but have them located in different parts of their bodies. When cut, they bleed not blood but a black, bile-like substance that corrodes through metal and burns flesh. Whatever the world the scaroks originally came from, it must have been a strange one indeed to have produced such bizarre beasts such as these.

Squeelch
Size: 45 feet long
Threat: Medium

Resembling what would happen if someone had replaced the head of a hagfish with that of a squid, squeelches are bizarre subterranean organisms that make the undergrounds of Felarya their home. Solitary beasts, they tend to only be found in the most ancient of ruins, creating their territories there and incorporating feeding grounds that can span for miles about. Once these have become established, squeelches will not tolerate the presence of others of their own kin entering them, save for during the breeding season, which occurs every century or so. They are picky eaters, typically not bothering to waste the energy to hunt down a solitary adventurer or mutabok, though anything moving in larger numbers constitutes a feast that cannot be ignored. As the risk of their prey escaping or even fighting back always exist, squeelches prefer to lie in wait, picking off stragglers with their long tentacles. If that fails them, or they are discovered by one of their own predators, they will open their toothy maws wide, revealing the luminescent flesh within in a sudden flash. This is often enough to stun most things, allowing for either easy pickings or hasty escapes.

- - -

Tepaltzal
Size: 90 to 180 feet long
Threat: Medium
Habitat: Kryromia fields

Tepaltzals are great serpents that lurk within the fragrant depths of the Kryromia fields. From a distance, their immense serpentine bodies appear to be covered, at least from the "neck" down, in a colorful coating of tufted scales or feathers, but upon closer examination it is revealed that these are in fact petals. This 'plumage' helps the tepaltzal to hide amongst the forests of flowers, giving it a major advantage when it comes to hunting its prey, such as the chrotinids or miaxi. Also aiding it during these endeavors is a rather long, flexible tongue that they possess. Within the blink of an eye, they can launch it out, snatch a particularly tasty morsel, then retract it back into their open maw. Many creatures caught this way often never even realize what has happened until they're already well on their way to the stomach, and by then it's too late.

Like most serpents, tepaltzals will spend the majority of their mornings resting out in the open, soaking in the rays of the sun. During these times they will often ruffle their petals, releasing pollen as they do so, in order to mark their territories. Undetectable to most, this marker also acts as a calling card for the individual, telling others such things as how old and fit it is, whether or not it is healthy, and for those of the opposite sex, whether or not it ready to mate. When it comes to the latter, male tepaltzals will perform elaborate mating dances that involve swaying back and forth, coiling their bodies into numerous rings, and extending their petal plumage. The flashiest, most colorful ones will often win over the most females.
